Matomo is free open source analytics software, a privacy-friendly Libre alternative to Google Analytics. You can follow at:

➡️ @Matomo

The official site is at matomo.org

You can self-host it, or use paid-for third party hosting.

It is much better for privacy to use self-hosted analytics as data stays local. Google Analytics sends your users' data to Google.

In response to the Matomo post, I'd like to give some exposure to Plausible Analytics:
plausible.io/
fosstodon.org/@plausible

This software doesn't collect as much information as Matomo and is much better for page load times. They also provide a comparison to Matomo for those interested: plausible.io/vs-matomo

Matomo instances collect the following visitor data for their clients by following them around the web when they've left the original website:

Top keywords and search engines, websites, social media websites, top page URLs, page titles, user countries, providers, operating system, browser marketshare, screen resolution, desktop VS mobile, engagement (time on site, pages per visit, repeated visits), top campaigns, custom variables, top entry/exit pages, downloaded files, and many more, classified into four main analytics report categories – Visitors, Actions, Referrers, Goals/Ecommerce (30+ reports)

The only way to stop this surveillance is to close the browser and start again.
