The wait is finally over. From 2024, USB-C will be the common standard for electronic devices in the EU – and we have already seen the impact!

It means
🔌The same charger for all phones, tablets and cameras
⚡ Harmonised fast-charging technology
🔄Reduced e-waste

One charger to rule them all.

Now, a reality.

@EU_Commission Please stop calling USB a charging cable. It’s a UNIVERSAL SERIAL BUS… charging is a **bonus** side effect of it’s (excellent) power delivery. All the emphasis on charging leads to stuff like the iPhone 15 having pathetic USB support.

@boxofsnoo You are correct, USB is so much more than just USB-PD, but there is a reason people are talking about charging so much.

Unified charging is the single greatest practical benefit brought to us by USB-C and USB 3.1. It is also the driving reason for this legislation.
@EU_Commission

@clacke @EU_Commission Strong disagree. The single greatest practical benefit is being able to transparently add peripherals to our devices, with a unified, common interface.

@boxofsnoo Ok, USB-C is better than USB OTG. I have never had a use for it myself, so I misread your comment.

On the other hand I think most people haven't had a use for it, while everyone has a need to charge their devices.

I'm happy that USB-C has succeeded where GreenPlug failed, and I can use a Nintendo charger to run a laptop or use the laptop charger to charge an electric razor.

@clacke Yep. I realllllly don't want everyone to allow the device creators to cheap out on the capability of USB though. Hold their feet to the fire until they include stuff like hard drives, webcams, mice, instruments... whatever. It's getting there, but with things like Qi2 it might give the manufacturers an escape hatch. We don't deserve that, give us peripherals and make these mega powerful computers into **actual computers**.
