Good morning tootlers. Today in most of the UK it's time to vote! (only local elections) I think I'll be taking Ted along with me for his first

This is what's wrong with the tech industry. The expectation that one should give their free time *EVERY DAY* or you're somehow "not passionate".

My response to that would be fuck you and your shitty fucking culture.

My kids and family are FAR more important to me than your ridiculous expectations.

So many electronics folk here? Or a server dedicated to #electronics ?

Dear people - what's the weirdest thing you have ever done, possibly due to ADHD? I'm working with 2 people right now - both fairly new, called Mary and Joan (let's say). I've never seen either of their faces. I needed to meet with Mary but accidentally invited Joan instead. After 1 hour talking about the database, Mary contacted me to ask when we were meeting. The meeting I just had with Joan. Joan was very helpful, gave lots of feedback. but was completely the wrong person. Aaargh!

Timeline needs some more silly nonsense so...

Favourite or reply to this toot, should you desire the following outcome, and per each of such we shall post one (1) daft and wrong fake etymology for an English word or phrase, phrased in a vaguely plausible sounding manner.

(Boosts welcome!)

I got some bear's garlic (Allium ursinum) and I've just noticed that one of the flower buds has bloomed in the fridge! :da_giggle:

So adorable. I have a whole bunch of the bear's garlic, so I put these in the flower press to remember the occasion.

Hey fedi friends;

It's okay to not think of the fediverse as your new home. It's okay to have multiple social networks you participate in. It's okay to grow your community here over time, and know that it will take time to grow here.

It's very rewarding to be here, if you keep showing up and putting in the effort.

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn said it this way, “If only it were all so simple! If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart?”

A mini-guide to content warning abbreviations

My headmate, Owashii, posted a basic guide, but since I have a much larger character limit than he does, I wanted to offer as comprehensive a guide to abbreviations as I could offer.

"Why abbreviate?"

Content warnings add to character-count, so if you have a lot to say, abbreviating helps.

Here are some you'll see very often:

cw: content warning
+, ~, -: positive, neutral, negative (in that order)
mh: mental health
ph: physical health
pol.: politics (commonly paired with country abbreviations such as "us, uk, fr, de, ca", etc.)
ec: eye contact (mostly used with selfies)
sui: suicide
hrt: hormone replacement therapy
grs: genital reconstruction surgery (our understanding is that "gender reassignment surgery" is missing the point and possibly offensive)
ment.: mention
adj.: adjacent

There are countless others (such as alc = alcohol), but I feel those tend to be fairly self-explanatory. The common ones I listed tend to be confusing if you're new to the platform.

Personal, covid adjacent

I started doing FediFollows (and slightly later FediTips and FediVideos) as the pandemic has severely restricted my social and job opportunities.

It is such a messed-up situation, I have to do something constructive to stay sane. Hopefully what I do on here is useful to others :blobcat:

My main aim with the "Fedi" accounts is to help people off Twitter, Facebook etc sustainably.

If you appreciate my work, please consider leaving me a tip (links are in my profile).

Half of UK employees 'threaten to quit' if they can't work from home
If you were in the privileged position of being able to work from home during the pandemic, you have got used to the flexibility of managing your hours and the increased freedoms of not having to commute.

Now, many bosses want people back in the office – it looks like they could have a fight on their hands.

One or two accounts regularly posting things that don't interest you is manageable, but the more you add, the easier it is to lose the signal in the noise. With no algorithm working to keep you addicted, it's easy to let your Home timeline get overrun. Follow freely, but also be ready to unfollow for basic quality of life reasons. The Federated timeline can be overwhelming, but your Home timeline shouldn't be. You have to tend it like a garden, and a little pruning goes a long way. #feditips

Autofocus glasses!
What with the inexorable march of time etc, I find it harder to change focus from near to far.
These glasses have refocusable lenses (from some horrible cheap dial-eye specs), a couple of little linear servos to drive them, and a couple of endoscope camera modules to track my eyes.
The focus is adjusted based on where my eyes are converging.

A few things going on with this one that might not be obvious.
I'm controlling it with a headset that tracks my head and eye movement. It also has cameras in the eyeballs, streaming a stereo feed back to the headset. Where I look, it looks.

Another stewart platform for the mount - they're great for getting fluid and responsive motion out of cheap servos.

I'm very fond of the Six Bug. A simple concept, quickly executed, and it worked better than I anticipated.

I'll start with Lego Things. This is a flip dot display programmed using lego punch cards. It serves no purpose.
The 3D model for it is available (, and there's web app for generating the cards (

The VK-Pocket. When you look at it, it looks back at you with your own eyes.

The eye on the screen is a live view. The black dot to the left is a wide angle high resolution camera; it performs face detection and crops the eye region for display, wherever it is in the frame.
