I am so confused rn. I set up a new account @heyrochelle@cloudisland.nz & I couldn’t transfer my follows/followers there yet so if you see me twice, it’s me being lost while I get myself working properly 😄

@heyrochelle It's really easy to switch, but there's a bug with the current software version that causes an error 😞

You set up an account on the new instance, then in "Preferences" there's an Alias functionality. You fill that in, and all your followers and followees from the old account get migrated to the new one!

I want to migrate my account to mastodon.nz but I am afraid of fucking it up in some improbably world-destroying way

I’ve been avoiding an but it seems to be a norm.

So, hey, I’m a cis pākehā woman living in Aotearoa New Zealand, pronouns are she/her. I’m disabled , & & some other stuff. I’ll most likely be tweeting pics of Cooper cat; music I’m listening to; maybe some other stuff. I’m often found in peoples replies just chatting. Don’t feel like you need to follow me just bc i follow you 🧡

Just because it might have been lost in the stream, a tip for the new fedi friends:

Post a with a wee bit about yourself and tag it with #introduction and #NZTwits to help others find you. Searching these tags will also help you find friends (new and old alike). 👋

Cooper is still getting used to mastodon, but I’m sure they have here.

Kia ora #NZTwits and other #newcomers

A couple of tips that it took me a while to learn.

1. You can pin multiple toots to the top of your profile. This might be a good idea for your introduction toot

2. Unlike birdsite there isn’t and algorithm to increase visibility of toots that you star they just save to your favourites. If you think a toot deserves more eyeballs then a boost is appreciated

Meet Cooper. He’s 17 & he gets whatever he wants bc he’s my angel & honestly: look at him.

I hope the photos show up ok bc I can’t see a way to edit them after linking them. Is that something I should do before posting?

hi new users! this is a reminder that mastodon's culture is NOT the same as twitter's-- you're entering a community, not a void, and we're reading your posts and want to interact with you

please don't treat this place as "twitter but with a new ui." the influx has been overwhelming for some of us who've been around for a while, we're happy to see new faces but please be considerate of the people around you as you join this space. thank u

For new people wondering why Mastodon is on thousands of servers instead of one:

-It helps protect us all against Elon Musk scenarios. It's very difficult for anyone to buy a network made of thousands of independently owned servers. (It's the same reason why no one owns the world's email network, because there are so many independent providers out there.)

-If your server misbehaves (or sells out to a malevolent billionaire), you can move your account to a different server, or even to a brand new server. Decentralisation means you're never trapped on a site you hate.

-Mastodon is an open platform where anyone can start their own server, and they don't need tech knowledge if they use a service like masto.host or federation.spacebear.ee

...and there are lots more good reasons too, to do with servers using alternative Fediverse software etc, but I'll save that for a future post 😁

It says something that #NZTwits is one of the globally trending hashtags on Mastodon (or is it just this instance?). I wonder if we lead the way (per capita) in leaving Twitter behind.

New folks might be wondering about the CW option. It's pretty simple - it lets you add a content warning onto your toot, but also obscures the content so you have to click on it to see the content. People tend to use them fairly liberally here. I don't post anything I think is objectionable, but some people are sensitive to certain topics, and it is just polite (and respectful) to give them fair warning. Nice when browsing the local or federated timelines, where you could see anything! #NZTwits
