There are a few key reasons <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/mastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#mastodon</a> is less toxic than <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/birdsite" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#birdsite</a> and more of a meritocracy: 1. Dopamine loop highly reduced — federated post distribution means that you don’t get the immediate gratification of likes and retweets 2. Boosts and favorites not displayed — about content not status 3. Lack of search function makes hunting targets far more difficult for trolls 4. Local and federated feeds equalize content — everyone gets an equal chance to be seen
