it's dawned on me that the reason Signal seems pretentious in the way it treats SMS is because it both requires and relies on phone numbers to operate. it wants to take over my SMS app but doesn't want to work with SMS. @session does not require a phone number, so it makes more sense that they wouldn't support SMS, even though Session is based on Signal's technology. same idea for @matrix, though they are also superior for other reasons.

guess who's SSH port was saved on their phone on a specific app that randomly happened to be backed up properly, even though half his phone wasn't, and no longer needs to contact support to obtain the SSH port locally 😎

is @matrix planning to utilize Android 11's bubbles? 👀

Android is slowly eating away at the reasons to root. rooters wanted themes, Android built in themes. rooters (like me) currently want to use alternative app stores, Android 12 is looking to allow for that without the annoying notification. I haven't used a non-rooted phone in a while but I might give it a go when my phone get Android 12

the reasoning here is that people who do not care about crypto/privacy will not change apps unless there's some incentive. I just had an experience where the single request someone had in order for them to switch to Signal was to keep their old messages. Signal could not provide.

if the privacy community could advertise superior features, it would massively expand the products and make them mainstream.

imo, Signal seems a little pretentious in the way it refuses to work with SMS. I think Signal would be adopted by far more people if you could do things like import old messages from other SMS apps or text with SMS from the laptop. I understand it takes work to get these things done, but all I'm saying is that Signal will eventually lose out to things like Matrix if it refuses to offer superior support for SMS compared to other SMS-only clients. There is no reason to use Signal over Matrix ime.

looks like (getsession.org) is getting closer and closer to being ready for the masses... looking forward to using it soon

I desperately want PeerTube to work but I *need* to be able to search for channels that are on other instances. sifting instances to find the channel I'm looking for is a nightmare.

a theory: people like closed source and centralized services because they can simply assume they're built correctly. while all systems have flaws, open systems are honest and allow you to see them.

this is not new: a comfortable lie is preferable to an uncomfortable truth.

an ADT technician "hacked" into cameras to spy on naked women and people having sex. these are two things that are not shameful, but are incredibly private. this is why privacy, encryption, zero-trust, and user choice are important.
