First inperson research group meeting since March 2020. We talked about writing tips, tricks, tools, styles, etc. It was a nice discussion.

Organized what turned into a mini-3 hour hack sprint on a code my research group and collaborators are developing. The group got a bunch of things ticked off the development todo list

Mastodon has a verification mechanism, though it looks different from Twitter's. We do not ask for your documents. Instead, if you have a website that you are known by, you can verify that you are the owner of that website.

Link to your Mastodon profile from the website, either through a visible link, or through a <link> tag in the head of the document, with a rel=me attribute, and link back to that page from your Mastodon profile. It should then get a green checkmark, like @Mastodon.

@megschwamb I try to always have an alternative available so I don’t fall back into work out of default. I find I have to be _very_ intentional in what I choose, and it took a lot of exploration to find them. Now, my toolkit contains playing music, read the local news, and listen to at least one podcast episode on a walk.

Set up my laptop and phone to today ignore notifications from email in the morning until an hour when I would be in the “office”. Aim is that I am only start dealing with email at 9am or later. I usually jump in once I am awake between 5-8am.

Partially trying to carve out some non-thinking about work time in the morning and also maybe build in some thinking time for research

Lecture 2 of the grad astro outreach and communication skills module is in the bag. Students gave mini-practice talks and got feedback. We talked about different types of professional talks and also about poster designs.

Next week is all about social media both for science communication and networking and outline outreach.

This came in the mail today. My group will be reading through this book over the summer starting in June.

Great teaching is not enough if you have society and educators (including principals and headmistresses) constantly sending messages saying that girls should not and do not go into the field because it too hard a subject for them.
