This nonsense makes me angry. It is these stereotypes and passive aggressive messaging pervasive in society that kids pick up on. Any gender can do STEM fields.

The observatory is being constructed right now in Chile. It is expected to turn on mid-2024.

The telecon is about the Vera C. Rubin Observatory, which is going to find an order of magnitude more Solar System objects than we know of today!

Nice to enjoy the lovely weather with the QUB Solar System research group in an outside beer garden. Now to get ready for my 10pm telecon

Here is the tl;dr for the #newbies about #Mastodon terms:

Toot = a post (or 'tweet')
Boost = re-sharing content (or 'retweet')
Favourite = liking or bookmarking something (or a 'star')
CW = content warning (basically self-censoring a post)
Instance = a version of Mastodon (like a Discord server or Reddit subreddit)

Remember 2 things:

1. if you don't like the way an instance is governed, you can always choose another
2. The internet isn't the be-all of life. Go outside & enjoy the sunshine

How do I find more and to follow? Help this millennial out with effective hashtags!

And now the adrenaline rush has ended. I’ve been able to tap into my giving a science/public talk persona when teaching but it’s tiring. It’s 5 o’clock. Time to go home. 🥱

A few years ago I made this flow chart of which Mastodon posts end up in which timelines!

So, you can see how each instance will have a different local timeline, and even a slightly different federated timeline - and you can see why the federated timeline moves so much faster than the local one, too.

This is why it's important to boost good posts and use hashtags - the fediverse is fragmented and harder to search by nature.

Hmm. I like the multi-column view of tweetdeck, and just discovered if you go into preferences on the web interface to Mastodon and enable the "advanced web interface" you get the multi-column view.

I am wide awake at 5:45 am, so how about a round of for the next hour or so. Anyone got astronomy or planetary science questions?
