Como é bom ver a nossa quebrada latino-americana dizendo não a esses projetos de direita autoritária, saudosas de ditaduras e com discursos já bem conhecidos de pânico moral, costumes e toda aquela hipocrisia.

software's gonna change the world, they said

a decade and a half ago, Facebook ate myspace's lunch and then kept going. soon after, the broad, varied world of webforums and community bulletin boards would gradually wither and die; the influx of would-be new members connecting to the internet wishing to connect with people over a certain topic would find a Facebook group, a Twitter hashtag, or comments on the videos of a YouTube channel, and thus never think to search the web for other spaces to discuss their interest.

soon, corporate-owned spaces gradually dialed back the control you had over what you saw, arbitrarily prioritizing what their algorithms thought would keep you more Engaged, shoving the most repugnant views imaginable into your face just to get a reaction, hiding posts from friends in crisis because the engagement data was a downer.

without community-owned community spaces, the corporate-owned fora ran deliberately unmoderated and allowed trolls, toxicity, and disinformation to become the norm.

software's gonna change the world, they said

a decade and a half ago the tech industry began replacing the productivity-oriented personal computer form factor with a consumption-oriented personal computer - that is to say, the walled-garden touchscreen-only handheld device.

this, in a sense, made computing accessible to a broader range of people—by severely narrowing the scope of what computing meant. it was much easier to, as a non-technical person, read the news, talk to people on the oft-preloaded Facebook and Twitter apps, etc. than it was on a desktop PC. (and that pre-loading matters, by the way; many simply do not understand how to install apps, though you and I think it's trivial)

in the ensuing years, continuing explosive growth of today's social media monsters’ proprietary platforms would turn to widespread surveillance capitalism, then soon after widespread political manipulation based on the estimated susceptibility of audiences, leveraged heavily by the alt-right to gain power 'round the world.

2634. Red Line Through HTTPS

title text: Some organization has been paying to keep this up and it hasn't been removed from search results. Seems like two votes of confidence to me.

"Uma história, uma narrativa, um filme, um desenho, uma imagem. Tudo isso constitui fruição de uma subjetividade que é compartilhada por pessoas desiguais. Não precisa ser igual para experenciar a cultura, ninguém é dono dela. Ninguém é dono da experiência subjetiva de participar do mundo. Mas alguém é dono de um prédio"
