Wish that Apple will not join forces with neither nor (and thus Microsoft) on their services trained unethically and presumably also illegally on content with NO consent from artists and copyright holders. Would be extremely double-standard from who usually fiercely defends its patents and logo 🍏

Bloomberg · Apple’s (AAPL) OpenAI Talks Intensify as It Seeks to Add AI FeaturesBy Mark Gurman

@pernillet Yeah, but... Apple doesn't defend their IP out of principle. They do it for money. They don't care about anyone else's IP - just their own.

@pernillet

Remember that patents and logos (trademarks) are completely different things from copyright.
I think we could have a perfectly good world without copyright and also without patents, but it would really be confusing without identifiable trademarks.

Disclosure of my viewpoints on patents and copyright:

My idea for a better patent system: ulrik.blog.aau.dk/2020/05/19/i

I think copyright should at least be very much restricted in time, to perhaps 10 years.

@pernillet Regarding whether apple should partner with OpenAI or Google. I think Apple should probably maintain control over their own technology stack, for their future mobility in positioning themselves.

We probably need some court cases in the US to establish whether the training of models based on publicly available data is legal.

Most of all we need the same global playing field for all technology companies.

@UlrikNyman Yes one thing is legal, another is ethical. And good w US cases, but we should also have EU cases. As far as I understand EU copyright law does not have a 'fair use' doctrine which Microsoft and Co. believe will make their training legal

@pernillet maybe Apple can open up their walled garden so communities can install their own language and AI tools. We can do a better job than big tech when our communities lead the curation of data and creation of tools.
