also this is a cold take probably but also worth saying that much as I like the fediverse as an alternative to twitter, its still just a website (or bunch of websites)

coming away from twitter could be as good an opportunity as any to get involved w yr local community and enact change on a smaller but more tangible level

not telling you what to do or suggesting this is realistic or possible for everybody (I'm hardly one to talk lol). but more just kind of throwing it out there that while online spaces and discourse obviously have their place and importance, that importance can be easily inflated, esp at times like this. so just something to be aware of

Media descriptions are a hard thing to get a handle on, and it's a new habit to get into.

You can follow @PleaseCaption who will yell at you whenever you forget to describe your media - it's a big help!

How to describe:
*Include the media and style ("a rough black ink sketch")
*Include the subject ("...of a woman in a field")
*Include the mood ("she looks happy and the scene is peaceful").

Tell the story of your image to someone who can't see it.

Twitter has algorithms to get you engaged. Mastodon does not. So in order to enjoy Mastodon you have to take some time to reach out and find content and follow folks that you enjoy. Don't expect Mastodon to send you random popular posts to keep you engaged, you have to curate your own feed. But this is good! It gives you control.

I remember one of the things that motivated me to look into the state of decentralized social media (and ultimately begin working on Mastodon) in 2016 were talks that a controversial billionaire might buy Twitter.
