This week's #ThreadThursdays is a mash-up of two of my favorite things, black holes and sci-fi/speculative fiction!!

As an astronomer who researches black holes, I know how they work (well, what humans have learned so far). As a media consumer, I love when the science is plausible at first glance. I'm not a very interrogative fiction reader/viewer & I can suspend my disbelief pretty well, so it just needs to past the shrug test:
"Could something along these lines work?"
*shrugs* "Maybe?"

M64 Black Eye Galaxy

Magnitude 8.52 spiral galaxy located 17 million light-years away in the constellation Coma Berenices. It was discovered by Edward Pigott in 1779.

My latest astrophoto: M101, the so-called Pinwheel Galaxy, a face-on spiral galaxy in Ursa Major, 22 million light-years away. Taken with my RedCat 51, Sony A7r, and Sky Watcher Star Adventurer mount from Haines Falls, New York, 70 light frames and 30 dark frames, all 15 seconds at ISO 3200, processed in AstroPixelProcesser and Photoshop.

NGC 3607

Magnitude 10.8 lenticular galaxy located 73 million light-years away in the constellation Leo. It was discovered by William Herschel in 1784.

As complete 22º solar halos go, this is perhaps the clearest and most colourful I’ve seen. Pretty awesome stuff from this morning.

M99

Magnitude 9.9 grand design spiral galaxy located 49 million light-years away in the constellation Coma Berenices. It was discovered by Pierre Méchain in 1781.

Stars greater than 8 times the mass of the Sun die quite spectacularly when their core fusion ends. Stars this massive die in a massive explosion called a supernova. What’s visible after the explosion is a supernova remnant such as the Crab Nebula shown here.

M59

Magnitude 9.6 elliptical galaxy located 50.1 million light-years away in the constellation Virgo. It was discovered by Johann Gottfried Koehler in 1779.

An image I took of the Aristarchus Plateau earlier this year. I think it’s a fascinating area, quite weird looking.

It's time for my favorite part about being an astronomer: an observing night! Tonight, I'm on the Palomar 200 inch telescope, although I'm doing the observing from home. I've been a bit swamped with other things to talk too much about #Astronomy, but tonight's the perfect opportunity to get back into it.

So, for the next twelve hours, let's enjoy the fun! #SciComm #Space

Happy birthday Helen Sharman, Britain's first astronaut! (Something for us to be proud of during these horrible days).

If you're in Chile or are planning to visit soon, ESO's observatories are reopening for in-person visits!

The tours are free, but you have to register in advance: eso.org/public/announcements/a

I'm biased 'cause I worked there for 7 years, but it's totally worth it!

As if the light wasn’t great enough on arrival, after my stroll along Glen Devon I caught this brilliant rainbow around the Frandy Tree. At one stage it was a complete double arc with supernumeraries.
