Matrix and Slack can be used for the same needs, absolutely. I would always recommend using Matrix, for several reasons.
Matrix isn't as simple as WhatsApp, that much is true. The interface isn't always as intuitive as you'd want (at least Element, I don't have much experience with other clients) and you should have a basic idea of what encryption is. WhatsApp and Signal do all key management for you, but on Matrix you have to do parts of it manually, which can be very intimidating for non-techies.
If you want to dive in, download Element, the standard Matrix client, create an account and start chatting. You can create an account on matrix.org, but I can give you an account on my server too, if you'd like a different Matrix address than

Yeah, I've been using Matrix too even just like what you have mentioned, it's a bit complicated and the chat is very similar to Discord. Need time to adapt with the UI/UX.
