Because the man on the right is the Hamburger Captain Gustav Schöder (1885-1959), admirable seafarer and Righteous Among the Nations.

Ikonographische Encyklopädie der Wissenschaften und Künste“ (Picture Atlas to the Conversation Lexicon. Iconographic Encyclopaedia of the Sciences and Arts) of Johann Georg Heck (1795-1857).

Geschichte der Erforschung und Eroberung der Meere" (In the Depths of the Seas. History of the Exploration and Conquest of the Seas), published in Germany in 1891 by Carl Falkenhorst (1853-1913).
The #ArchgivesHashtagParty of the US National Archives is #ArchivesBabies . This anonymous woman and this very young passenger were travelling aboard the German ocean liner Prinzess Irene around 1906. The ship became the USS Pocahontas in 1917 and was bought back by her original owners in 1922 to be the Bremen until 1928 and the Karlsruhe until her scrapping in 1933.
