Athabasca River

The Athabasca River flows through the peaceful Athabasca Valley towards Athabasca Falls in Jasper National Park. This glacial river starts high above in the Canadian Rockies.
The rugged. snow covered peaks of the Rocky Mountains stand tall in background. The sky is overcast. There is enough light getting through the clouds to cast just a little bit of color from the coming sunset.

Rainbows Over the Athabasca River - Jasper National Park

It was on this walk that I believe the most inspired photography at the day occurred. It was partly because of the incredibly gorgeous scene and secondarily it was because of the great light.

YORK FACTORY EXPRESS JOURNAL, 1831:
"We set off in the canoes, two gentlemen and nine men in each, and during our voyage, which continued thirteen days, we encountered many hardships and delays. The #AthabascaRiver , so shallow and full of sandbanks, or as the Canadians call them, Battures, as to break our frail bark canoes five or six times a day, and force us ashore to kindle fires and repair them.

YORK FACTORY EXPRESS JOURNAL, 1827:
"At breakfast time two of our canoes required gumming. We afterwards ascended a chain of rapids to the head of Rapids des Mors where, as our canoes require gumming again, we encamped at 5 pm. At 8 of these rapids, which are very strong, three of the canoes were handed up -- only one has been able to ascend under the poles which is owing to the dexterity of the Boute. Lafrance and Jollibois are on the recovery.
