Miguel Afonso Caetano<p>DICTATORSHIP:</p><p>"The video of Ozturk’s arrest reveals a violation of basic civil rights and decency that should sicken every American and frighten legal immigrants to their core. For the Trump administration, it’s another leverage point to bring universities into line while also throttling another avenue of legal immigration.</p><p>The scene itself resembles one out of a small paramilitary country. An unmarked vehicle pulls up. Masked agents in plainclothes emerge. They accost Ozturk, who utters a small scream. One agent wrests her cellphone out of her hand. With stunning swiftness, she is handcuffed and escorted away.</p><p>Ozturk, a former Fulbright scholar, has been charged with no crime so far, according to her lawyer. 'One may protest against evil; it can be exposed and, if need be, prevented by use of force. Evil always carries within itself the germ of its own subversion in that it leaves behind in human beings at least a sense of unease. Against stupidity we are defenseless.' When provoked, 'the stupid person, in contrast to the malicious one, is utterly self-satisfied and, being easily irritated, becomes dangerous by going on the attack.'</p><p>"Fighting stupidity, to Bonhoeffer’s mind, first necessitates understanding it. 'In essence not an intellectual defect but a human one,' stupidity can descend upon practically anyone: 'under certain circumstances, people are made stupid or that they allow this to happen to them.' And it happens most noticeably when a particular figure or movement seizes the attention of the public. 'Every strong upsurge of power in the public sphere, be it of a political or of a religious nature, infects a large part of humankind with stupidity,' he writes. Since such phenomena could hardly arise without blindly obedient masses, it seems that 'the power of the one needs the stupidity of the other.'</p><p>"You can see Bonhoeffer’s theory of stupidity explained in the illustrated Sprouts video above, and you can learn more about the man himself from the documentary Bonhoeffer. Or, better yet, read his collection, Letters and Papers from Prison. Though rooted in his time, culture, and religion, his thought remains relevant wherever humans follow the crowd. Nevertheless, they may be why Suárez has been effectively disappeared by the US government into a Salvadoran mega-prison.</p><p>Mother Jones has spoken with friends, family members, and lawyers of ten men sent to El Salvador by the Trump administration based on allegations that they are members of the Venezuelan organized crime group Tren de Aragua. All of them say their relatives have tattoos and believe that is why their loved ones were targeted. But they vigorously reject the idea that their sons, brothers, and husbands have anything to do with Tren de Aragua, which the Trump administration recently labeled a foreign terrorist organization. The families have substantiated those assertions to Mother Jones, including—in many cases—by providing official documents attesting to their relatives’ lack of criminal histories in Venezuela. Such evidence might have persuaded US judges that the men were not part of any criminal organization had the Trump administration not deliberately deprived them of due process.</p><p>On March 14, President Donald Trump quietly signed a proclamation invoking the Alien Enemies Act—a 1798 law last used during World War II. The order declared that the United States is under invasion by Tren de Aragua. Miguel Afonso Caetano<p>"In the case that concerns us here, the request to the IMF for a loan violates not only the National Constitution but also Law 27,612, passed in 2021, whose second article states that “any financing program or public credit operation carried out with the IMF, as well as any extension of the amounts – in addition to terms and conditions – of such programs or operations, shall require a law of the Honorable Congress of the Nation that expressly approves it.” In short, Javier Milei’s government is acting in open violation of the Constitution and the laws of this country, something that prima facie would violate the IMF’s own regulations, whose Board, if it did not take this situation into account, would become an accomplice in a violation of the Constitution and the laws of Argentina.</p><p>In view of this accumulation of irregularities, the debt that Argentina may contract becomes an “odious debt” not enforceable by the eventual creditors, in this case the IMF. This is something that has been sustained by US jurisprudence since the end of the 19th century up to the present day.
