After several hours on a boat in the Beagle Channel we returned to Ushuaia for a walk around. Stunning scenery surrounded it but the city itself is fairly small and we mostly looked for street art and souvenirs. We did encounter a protest march at one point because that's an Argentinian national pastime, and one of our fellow cruise passengers even joined in, helping to stoke braziers and hold up flags. Probably not the most sensible thing to do as a foreign tourist to be fair, but he had fun and a good memory of his trip.

We headed back to the cruise ship with the expectation of a fabulous sail away from Ushuaia to look forward to but the wind speed and force kept our ship pinned to the dock until the early hours of the morning.

We're on a jetty sticking out from a beach of boulders to protect the city on the left from coastal erosion and flooding. There are a few buildings visible on the left before the view on land gives way to a ring of mountains and curve around this bay of water we're at. Some mountains are in shadow with the heavy cloud cover overhead but there are patches of blue sky and some distant peaks are lit up showing sharp jagged edges with snow on the highest points. There are more jetties in front of us but the nearest one has suffered some damage and is broken apart halfway along with some spurs of wood jutting out of the flat grey-green water. A thin jetty further back has people walking along it towards tour boats that are tied up at the jetty on the right.

For #MeerMittwoch and during the COVID lockdown period we still managed to take a break under restrictions, spending a few days along the coast in #Weymouth where long walks with sea air was the order of business. This was when many cruise ships were anchored off shore as well. There are two in view here - both Marella ships - but Cunard and P&O also had vessels visible from the beach.

We're on a beach of fine, warm-toned pebbles, with the water's edge running from the bottom right of view to a small sand bank on which there are boulders amassed four or five deep above the surface to form a protective barrier a dozen metres long that stretches from left to right at around chest height. The sea is calm and grey-green in tone and it stretches to the horizon on the right but meets low, distant cliffs in hazy silhouette to the left. Far from shore, at sea there are three ships visible. One is an unladen cargo carrier and it's passing in front of one of the other two ships, dwarfed in size by them. They are both similar-looking cruise ships and it's just possible to make out a waved pattern of dark blue and white on their hulls with some lighter blue elements elsewhere, including the single funnel stack that each has. There are some patchy areas of blue sky in the clouds that are brightly lit by the sun to the right but carry the threat of rain in their dark masses to the left and above.

We took an excursion while in Ushuaia that saw us hop on a boat and head down the Beagle Channel for around three hours. During this time we were treated to majestic views of the surrounding landscapes - particularly the impressive Martial Mountains - and got up to a sea lion colony, getting as far as the Les Eclaireurs lighthouse before heading back. It was bitterly cold but beautiful.

We're on water, on a small boat just off a rocky islet in a dark, choppy sea of other small rocky islets under a sky with a few patches of pale blue sky peeking through the bubbling, rain-filled clouds above. The horizon shows a chain of mountains along the coast, jagged with icy tops and deep shadows in the clefts. The islets are devoid of any vegetation with pale, rough rocky tops becoming dark brown, perhaps clogged with seaweed along the water line. Atop the islet in front of us there is a lighthouse. It's a simple, slightly tapered cylinder with the lamp housing at the very top protected by a railing. The lighthouse is split into three even bands of red top and bottom with white in the middle.

Another D20 Cruise under the belt! I had a great time at sea, catching up with friends, making new ones, and seeing new places. I've been back on land a couple of days now and am catching up with posts.

We had another sea day after the Falklands during which we cruised out and around the southernmost part of Cape Horn, a very grey and rainy day sadly devoid of the fierce seas we'd been looking forward to. The following day brought us to the Argentinian port of Ushuaia. It remains to this day the most awe-inspiring view to wake up to we've experienced, with a ring of jagged mountains shadowing the small city and everything brightening up slowly as the sun rose, bringing more and more detail to the incredible, natural surroundings.

We're on the balcony of a cruise ship in the early hours of the morning docked at a port. The sun is rising but it's behind a ring of mountains surrounding the port so everything is dark with a thick, cloudy sky and mountain range tinged dark blue. The mountains form a long band from halfway up to about three quarters of the way up the view with one individual peak to the right but the rest largely straight with sharp edges. There is some snow packed in clefts and valleys but the majority of the mountainscape is dark rock. Nestled in the darkness of the base of the mountains and sprawling forwards towards the dock out of view below us there is a city of mostly low buildings with occasional apartment blocks of a few more storeys in height amongst them. Street lights and that of some vehicles out at this time glow orange with the warm colours contrasting with the cool ones prevalent in the upper half of the shot.

Went with one that had a large number of sea days to port days. With these larger Celebrity Edge class ships we really want to spend more time on ship vs ports.

This will make two for 2026 both heading to places we have not been before. *crosses fingers*
