There used to be a #Linux application for text input with a mouse (or joystick/maybe eye tracker) >10 years ago, where you would move the pointer within a continuum of moving characters and syllables. It felt like Markov chain suggestions with the most probable next part of a word being bigger than less probable ones.

@notabenemovies found it. It was #Dasher, dasher.zone/

Blue Dashers at Van Horne Retention Pond

20 July 2024

After the disappointing visit to Fairview Farm Wildlife Preserve, I decided to stop at the retention pond at Van Horne Park. On the 45-minute drive home, my mind drifted, and I had a brief conversation with myself about bacon.

May was a decent month for #doordashing considering I was actually very busy with other things most of the month including one week that I was almost totally absent from. Still got to $1200 for the month. An average of $23/hr.

I’ve noticed a few new faces on the rounds lately but mostly it seems to be me and a group of about 6 other fellows (most of them know each other) that do 99% of the deliveries. I’ve introduced myself to a few.

I’m getting consistent good paying deliveries most of the time. I’m still waiting for the one remaining <5 star review to drop off so I can have a full 100 five ⭐️ rating which should maximize the opportunity.

I enjoy it. I have a system. Although it is definitely less profitable in the Prius vs the EV. And also, I haven’t had an offer for a shopping order in weeks, which is awesome. *knocksonwood*

Just discovered the Category Groupings in Apple Numbers. Useful! Extended my spreadsheet for Dasher tracking all the way out to the full year and now I can group by year, month and week (the Dasher app goes by week).

The one trick is if you want subgroups you really have to do it at the beginning. It's very hard (impossible?) to properly add subgroups after. They get all mixed up.

The groups create their own calculation line where you can sum, average, etc that column in the group.

I’m going to have to use this for my historical weather spreadsheets!

I made a spreadsheet 🤓 of DoorDasher stats since Jan 1.
Dashes: 9 ($CAD22/dash)
Deliveries: 26 ($7.89/delvry)
Base Pay: $108.25
Peak Pay: $6
Tips: $90.92
Total: $205.17
Active: 6hr 26m ($31.89/hr)
Dash Time: 12hr 5m ($16.98/hr)
Dist: 247.2km
Power: 37.89kWh (6.37km/kWh)
Fuel Cost: $4.93 ($0.02/km)
Fuel+Ins: $6.86 ($0.03/km)
CRA Tax Deductible Drive: $173.04

Well, I guess I have officially joined the 21st century Gig economy. A few months back I set up a Dasher account on Door Dash just to see how it worked.

On New Year's Eve, we were bored of the second run of the NYE TV show, so Tree and I went dashing mostly for the drive and did a couple deliveries. We had fun.

So I've been doing a few more this week when I had an hour or two to spare. It's an impressively efficient system considering how new it is to our area and the variety of restaurants that use it, even in my small town.

I've put in about 6.5hrs (mostly NY Day) and made an average of $CAD20/hr inc. tips. Not sure if it's going to be a solid thing, but I guess my foot is in the door.

If you're interested, let me know. Happy to answer questions about it. I've done tech consultant/help kind of work off and on for over 20 years and have had a business name associated with that for most of that time but it's never been more than the odd job here and there. That was kind of the 20th century version of the side hustle.

This app-based stuff is interesting.

#Missouri residents can don their kerchiefs and caps and settle down for a long winter's nap tonight, knowing that #Santa's nine #reindeer are free of tuberculosis, brucellosis and chronic wasting disease. The state's Department of #Agriculture recently issued a permit allowing #SaintNick to fly his team through the state to deliver presents this #Christmas Eve.

Sidenote: as a former #DoorDash #DoorDasher #Dasher delivery driver in the United States (#atx #AustinTX #Austin to be specific), I'd be very interested in seeing if other studies from a #Marxist perspective have been done here, and whether or not they line up with the observations made by Rafael Grohmann, Mateus Mendonça, and Jamie Woodcock in Brazil and the UK.

The entire time I was reading this article, I was nodding along, thinking: "Yeah, that's similar to what I was doing on Reddit. Yeah, I've had the occasions where DoorDash 'support' wasn't very supporting. Yeah, I've had customers and vendors alike try to jerk me around. Yeah, I've gotten dirty looks as a Dasher at restaurants."
