My #NixOS #setup. Even when I #ported it once to #another #machine, I #forgot to add the #user #password. So I kind of went into a #ghost user #session. All my setup is #rock #solid #stable and never #broke it though I use a lot of #unstable #packages. #Nix and #NixOS are just
Indeed.
Back In The Day, I used to sell and install hard drives in computers. The boss had gotten a deal on some slightly sketchy previous-generation disks - ancient Seagate (IIRC) 20MB drives (MFM interface! State of the art at the time was 60MB RLL disks, by Toshiba I think). Those felt spacious in an age of 808[68] computers.
I didn't get my first hard disk until my second Amiga, an A3000. I paid $1,800 for a 540MB drive. In terms of minimum wage at the time, that was about ten weeks of full-time work, before deductions.
My point? I'm with you. It boggles my mind that so many people still trust their data to "the cloud", which as you say is just "someone else's computer", even with the constant stories of accounts suddenly closed without recourse, credentials lost, cloud providers deleting files, and on and on. Storage is dirt cheap these days. At least keep a copy of everything - and I mean everything - on storage media that you own and physically possess.
There's a saying that there are two kinds of computing people: those who have experienced a data-loss incident, and those that will experience a data-loss incident.
Save your disk, write files directly into RAM with /dev/shm

As it turns out - you CAN have too fast #disk speeds!
BeamNG Drive added new scenarios, one of which is packed full with AI cars and props. When I try to launch it however, it freezes and crashes my PC due to the game consuming all of 32 GB of RAM when loading.
As it turns out - since I have 2x NVMe 4.0 drives in RAID 0 (14 GB/s seq read) the games is unable to process all of this fast enough, so the drives load data faster than the game can dump them from RAM.
Hilarious
Before selling the zip disk drive, I recorded a short video of how to insert and reject a zip disk.
I've successfully built the recent version of #VolksForth for the #Commodore64 and have created a #d64 #disk #image which also contains all relevant sources as text files (in SEQ format) so they can be loaded and compiled using the new INCLUDE word because VolksForth 3.9.x supports text files and clasic blk storage.
I've also included #vi65 which is a clone of the #vi editor for the C64 (and other #Commodore and #Atari #8bit machines). It comes in versions with 40, 53, 64 and 80 column support. I have provided all of them but recommend the 64 column version for various reasons.
(I'll upload the final image to csdb.dk once I'm happy with it)
Anybody remember the Zip disk?
It was an alternative to the floppy disk for data storage - until USB sticks took over.
I just found another one, but sadly, I sold my dad's Zip drive on eBay a few years ago.
It occurs to me that computer discs and audio discs were named in a certain way, but I’m only guessing.
Compact Disc with a C because you could see the round part.
Minidisc with a C
Floppy Disk was square so with a K.
Hard Disk was squarish so with a K
Does anyone know this silly info?

#macOS #Tahoe brings a new #disk #image format
Disk images have been valuable tools marred by poor performance. In the wrong circumstances, an encrypted sparse image (#UDSP) stored on the blazingly fast internal #SSD of an #Apple silicon #Mac may write files no faster than 100 MB/s, typical for a cheap hard drive. One of the important new features introduced in macOS 26 Tahoe is a new disk image format that can achieve near-native speeds: #ASIF
