"Promosa" - een consortium van Thorizon, VDL Groep en DEMCON - gaat werken aan het ontwikkelen en testen van onderdelen voor zo'n kernreactor. Dat moet binnen tweeënhalf jaar resulteren in een prototype en een testfaciliteit in Noord-Brabant – zonder nucleaire component, dat wel. In 2030 moet dan begonnen worden aan de bouw van een échte Brabantse thorium SMR-kernreactor. De provincie draagt 50% bij aan de totale kosten van 8 miljoen euro in de hoop dat het hoogwaardige bedrijvigheid aan zal trekken. Promosa had <a href="https://demcon.com/nl/news/innovative-collaboration-for-future-proof-energy-molten-salt-reactor-development" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">begin december</a> een subsidie bij de provincie aangevraagd. De overige financiering komt van de bedrijven zelf. Thorizon heeft overigens ook <a href="https://www.neimagazine.com/research-development/thorizon-signs-rd-agreement-with-edf-on-msr-design/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">nauwe banden</a> met het Franse EDF, dus de vraag is wel of Frankrijk het ook prima vind dat Brabant met de eer zou gaan strijken.Thoriumreactoren zijn niet echt nieuw. Tussen 1960 en 1980 zijn thorium-kerncentrales gebouwd in de Verenigde Staten, Duitsland, Engeland, Rusland, India en Japan.
