The Caspian Sea faces an ecological and economic crisis, as rapidly falling water levels threaten marine life, vital industries, and regional climate stability, demanding urgent international action to avoid an Aral Sea-like collapse timesca.com/caspian-sea-shrink #CaspianSea #EcologicalCrisis #MarineConservation #WaterConservation #SaveOurSeas #Eurasia #CentralAsia

#Longtailedtits build these ethereal moss-lichen-cobweb nests in which to raise their broods, but fewer than one in five pairs succeed. They may help another pair to raise their brood instead. But if some species' survival hangs on such odds at the best of times, what will the present and worsening #ecologicalcrisis mean for them?

I took a badly needed birding break, today, at the Marine Nature Study Area. What does the future hold for these guys? Even under the most optimistic scenario for climate change, I believe ~30% of our species are predicted to go extinct by the end of the century. And of course, climate change goes hand in hand with other anthropogenic factors, none of which have halted, but which will certainly accelerate under the current regime. This is where Christian Cooper's observation that environmental and social justice must march in tandem comes in. Please see captions for id's.

‘A different dimension of loss’: the entomologists confronting the great insect die-off

Scientists have identified 2 million species of living things. No one knows how many more are out there, and tens of thousands may be vanishing before we have even had a chance to encounter them.

@AJStein_de @Dragofix If the world adopted #plantbased #diets it would free up an area of #land equivalent to the whole African continent (Joseph Poore). That amount of land could then be returned to nature, help reverse the #ecologicalcrisis & sequester huge amounts of #carbon from the atmosphere. Widespread adoption of plant-based diets is now the only way to resuscitate the Paris 1.5 #ClimateChange target. #keep1point5alive is outrageous #optimism without it.

"I'm just baffled by so much mainstream political, strategic and economic thinking, which totally excludes the climate and #ecologicalcrisis, as if it's trivial. The reality is it is going to change everything.

Change is coming, whether you like it or not."
