Gunners Shot<p></p><p><em>On the Eve of 25th anniversary of Kargil War, remembering how Indian Army using high volumes of Artillery fire and supported by Indian Air Force strikes, recaptured the heights in the Drass and Kargil area. </em></p><p><strong>By Lt Gen P R Shankar (R)</strong></p><p>Published in the <a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/business/defence-on-the-eve-of-25th-anniversary-of-kargil-war-3564903/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Financial Express</a> @ <a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/business/defence-on-the-eve-of-25th-anniversary-of-kargil-war-3564903/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.financialexpress.com/business/defence-on-the-eve-of-25th-anniversary-of-kargil-war-3564903/</a> </p><a href="https://gunnersshot.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/image-1.png" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"></a><p></p><p>It was in early May 1999 that it was discovered that the Pakistanis had infiltrated across the LOC and had occupied the heights overlooking the National Highway 1A from Srinagar to Leh. The highway was the lifeline for Leh and the troops deployed there. The Pakistani aim was to cut the lifeline off. Attempts were made to dislodge the intruding Pakistanis. Most of the assaults were based on Infantry alone with minimal firepower. The Pakistanis who were perched on hilltops could repulse all our attacks which lacked adequate Artillery. In fact, in 1999, the Indian Army leadership had literally forgotten how to use its Artillery having been fed on a diet of excessive counter insurgency operations. On the other hand, the Pakistanis used Artillery boldly in the initial stages of the <a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/business/defence-all-women-motorbike-rally-commemorates-25th-kargil-vijay-diwas-3564525/#:~:text=Every%20year%2C%20Kargil%20Vijay%20Diwas,who%20participated%20in%20Operation%20Vijay.&text=The%201999%20Kargil%20War%20stands,hostile%20terrains%20of%20Jammu%20%26%20Kashmir." rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Kargil war</a>. They brought up vintage pieces like the 5.5-inch guns into high altitudes and effectively used infiltrators as trans-border OPs to interdict NH 1A and destroy the Kargil Ammunition dump May-Jun in 1999. As per a Pakistani account “<em><a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/india-news/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">India</a> used frontal assaults supported by limited <a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/business/defence-a-gunners-day-tribute-to-the-regiment-of-artillery-3254443/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Artillery</a> in the first weeks of the conflict.” </em>The Indian Army suffered unnecessary casualties while the enemy continued to remain in place.</p><p>We were rudely shocked by what had happened. That forced us to bring Artillery into the battle in a meaningful manner. Under hostile conditions, in high altitude, in treacherous single way roads and tracks, Indian Army concentrated more than twenty Artillery regiments of 105mm Guns, 155mm Bofors, 120mm mortars and Grad BM21s by 10 Jun 1999. These were deployed in various sectors in the Kargil war theatre under direct enemy observation and fire in extremely difficult terrain. This ‘<em>in the face’</em> deployment was unconventional due to constricted terrain and the limited gun areas available. Dummy gun positions were prepared. Ammunition stocks were steadily built up. And then…the Pakistanis were clobbered.<a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/business/defence/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"></a></p><p>Nasim Zehra, the author of ‘Kargil to the Coup’ writes in her book “<em>The Pakistanis found themselves in a difficult military environment. The Pakistani posts that previously neither the Indian air force sorties could hit nor the Indian soldiers could scale alive, were now under continuous artillery attack. Their Bofor guns had done the trick for them. Their maximum range of 30 km enabled deep strikes on the enemy’s gun positions, administrative installations, ammunition dumps, and headquarters, besides neutralizing forward positions held by the intruders. By moving up these guns, 105 mm field guns, 160 mm and 120 mm mortars and 122 mm GRAD BM 21 Multi Barrel Rocket Launchers (MBRLs) into forward positions, the Indians were capable of ‘direct’ fire on enemy localities -literally under the nose of the enemy. By early June, it became almost impossible to move <a href="https://financialexpress.com/about/logistics/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">logistics</a> from the logistic base to the posts and pickets on the forward ridges via nullahs and mountains. Intense shelling and bombing destroyed <a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/about/pakistan-cricket-team/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Pakistan</a>’s logistics network. If a hundred porters left, only ten could reach their destination.” </em>The hitherto fore jubilant Pakistanis were being disrupted beyond their wildest imagination. She goes on to write that “<em>by June 10th Indian Artillery regiment had amassed a large number of artillery units in extremely difficult terrain. On the military front, this Indian artillery fire turned the tables on Pakistan. If the Indian infantry had suffered high casualties until early June, by mid-June it was raining fire and brimstone onto Pakistani troops occupying posts on the Tololing and Tiger Hills. Op KP was facing sharp military reversals and singularly on account of accurate and timely delivery of TNT. The Gunners’ fire assaults became the principal battle-winning factor</em>”. From here on, Pakistanis could only lose and they did.</p><p>In an era where there were no drones or satellites, young Forward Observation Officers, and battery commanders fought shoulder to shoulder with the <a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/business/defence-india-tanzania-military-collaboration-strengthening-defence-capabilities-through-mechanized-infantry-partnership-3354870/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Infantry</a> in all assaults. They brought down sustained and accurately overwhelming Artillery fire on relatively small areas atop precipitous slopes to blast the Pakistanis into ‘grave’ destruction. The Indian Artillery directly and incessantly hit the Pakistani posts and succeeded in reducing the posts to “powder”. As per Jawed Naqvi in Dawn, August 2002, <em> “After suffering heavy casualties with little success, it took several weeks to build up the troops and equipment needed to launch an effective counterattack. The Indian Army began its offensive in the first week of June and, using high volumes of Artillery fire and supported by Indian Air Force strikes, Indian army troops recaptured the heights in the Drass and Kargil area”</em></p><p>Firing by guns in the steep Himalayan slopes was so accurate that the Infantry would at times call for artillery fire up to as close as 40m, well within acceptable safety distances. Slight errors could have decimated our own troops. However our Artillery never wavered. 100-120 guns were, at times, fired in concert. Direct shooting, particularly by the Bofors, spelt terror amongst the Pakistanis and had a devastating effect in the destruction of enemy bunkers. It also meant considerable saving of ammunition as compared to indirect firing of guns, since almost every round fired was a hit. This also contributed to significantly reducing the logistic load in mountains. Firing over a hundred guns on a restricted target was like ‘<em>cracking a nut with a sledge hammer.</em>’ But it is a good innovation to adopt whenever possible to save valuable lives of one’s troops while making the enemy cry out “<em>Uncle</em>”.</p><p>To put it in perspective, Artillery won the war for India by pulverising Pakistani defence to smithereens in Kargil. The Indian Artillery fired over 2,50,000 shells, bombs and rockets during the Kargil conflict. Most of these were fired in an approximately 10-15 days period of intense fighting. 9,000 shells were fired on Tiger Hill alone when it was regained. During the peak period of assaults, on an average, each artillery battery fired over one round per minute for 17 days continuously. The Pakistanis were simply and overwhelmingly OUTGUNNED. </p><p>Such intense firing was seen only after the Second World War.<em> </em>To quote Nasim Zehra once again <em>“The intensity of artillery fire devastated both men and mountains”.</em></p><p>Another factor which needs to be recognised is that terrain, ground, weather and all other factors might deter, inhibit or preclude employment of Air, Infantry and Armour but very little deter Artillery. The terrain conditions during the Kargil War were treacherous. Movement was restricted to the limited roads. Move of Infantry was severely restricted due to the barren high altitude terrain. Employment of Air was restricted by fickle Himalayan weather, political issues and reasonably effective air defences of the Pakistanis. It was under these conditions that Artillery continued to hammer the Pakistanis ceaselessly. It enabled our troops to close in on the enemy without harm. Hence the value of firepower increased manifold. Artillery became the battle defining and winning factor.</p><p><strong><strong>Important Lessons</strong></strong></p><p>The Kargil War also brought home a few important lessons. Artillery is one of the most important components of warfare through ages. One should never forget that. War is a violent endeavour in which victory often goes to the side with Big Guns. What the Indian Artillery did in Kargil long back reinforces this fact. Surprise is a battle winning factor throughout the history of warfare. In Kargil, the differentiating aspect of employment of Artillery between Pakistan and India was surprising. Pakistan did not even imagine that Artillery could be deployed at such scale and much less used the way it was in high altitudes. India’s employment of mass artillery in a destructive role and especially the destruction wreaked by the Bofors was a strategic and tactical surprise for them. It swept them away completely. </p><p>Whatever happened in Kargil twenty-five years back is a deeply embedded experience which will not go away even if those who fought there have retired. They have handed over a tradition to those who man the defences of the nation today. However, with all such things, memories fade with time and are replaced often by tales. It is this context that we must repetitively go over what the Indian Artillery did in Kargil to change the course of the war. We must add this experience to the study which we must carry out in detail on the use of Artillery in the Russia-Ukraine war. A synthesis of the two will tell us how to shape our forces in the future to defeat our adversaries even if they are numerically superior.
