As a young black girl growing up in Glasgow, Jackie Kay found in Bessie someone with whom she could identify & who she could idolise. Kay mixes biography, fiction, poetry & prose to create an enthralling account of an extraordinary life
There are some stones that open in the night like flowers
Down in the red graveyard where Bessie haunts her lovers…
—Jackie Kay, “The Red Graveyard”
published in OTHER LOVERS (Bloodaxe, 1993)
Jackie Kay’s biography of Bessie Smith was published by Faber in 2021:

Small Things
20181015
In the smallest things
I find delight,
while in the bigger things—
as the world decides
to name them—
I find only vanity
and loss of form.
Every raindrop
holds a universe—
and every universe
is but an empty dream.
Give me the rain.
Got me a half ton
of your fuckin carcass
crushing my chest
soon to be caved in
by the weight of excess
toxic expectations
I guess
our thing ain't ever
gonna be the same
like back in the day
when we were weightless
when you left this world
my heart became a hovel
where a mansion once stood

A bronze little boy
who grew up with old books.
Turn the page
He read Twain with joy
and Jack London cooked.
Turn the page
But soon he got sick:
his mom kept him close
Turn the page
yet gave him her love
in tiny spoon doses.
Turn the page
Taught himself to write,
even in cursive
Turn the page
but her line of sight
was ever elusive.

How do I always seem
find myself
in the wrong place
with a bad crowd
of reprobates
always on the make
as they take
more than I have to give?
Not gonna be
your singing monkey anymore
Now I gotta deal with liberation
and all the angst freedom brings
He had his orders

There you go again, Naomi Shihab Nye, making me cry.
"And I looked around that gate of late and weary ones and I thought, This
is the world I want to live in. The shared world."

I pushed to prod,
Prod pushed back.
I prodded prod,
It cracked and cracked.
I fixed the bug,
Or so I swore.
One last deploy…
And prod is no more.
