_The Evening Post_, 7 March 1925:
THE OYSTER SEASON
FIRST CATCH LANDED
HOW THE TRAWLERS WORK
An excellent haul of “the first #oysters of the season” was made by the #Bluff #trawling fleet on Tuesday last, a total of four small steamers being engaged in the task, and returning to port laden with luscious bivalves.
The fleet made for the main oyster beds between Dog Island and the island of Ruapuke. These beds are always tried out at the first of the season, for they lie in shallow water … and it has been found that the shallow water oysters are the best, being hard-shalled [sic], large, and plump. The sea-floor of Foveaux Strait is covered from the western to the eastern extremity with huge oyster beds.…
The beds having been reached after 1½ hours steaming, the crew of five men on each boat commenced the serious work of the day. The boats began to steam slowly up against the tide at four knots per hour, and the dredging gear was got ready. There are two dredges on each boat—one forward arid one aft. They are worked both on the same side of the boat, and are slung over the side on half-inch wire rope running through derricks attached to the fore and mizzen masts.…

Southland is introducing a ‘three-strikes’ system for people who deliberately contaminate their recycling bins. Dunedin, Tauranga and Auckland already do this.
The gossip in my village today is that the weird Welshman mixed polystyrene with glass and received a first strike notice from the council. They didn't empty his bin and he was apparently on the phone complaining bitterly. He's a slow learner.

Cooker alert!
The Oreti Community Board has been taken over by cookers. A minor revolt in August saw Katie Allan become the new chair.
She's on record criticising the regional development agency Great South, saying they were obsessed with "premature climate-change modelling".
She has no time for Maori and accuses Local Government NZ of having "sold ratepayers out to a racist elite".
Imagine local govt infested with cookers. Watch this space.
Glencoe is a locality in the central #Southland region of New Zealand's #SouthIsland. Named after #GlenCoe (or in #ScottishGaelic: Gleann Comhan) in #Scotland, it is situated in the #HokonuiHills on the route of State Highway 96 as it travels between #Hedgehope and #Waitane. The nearest town of significant size is #Mataura to the east, while the city of #Invercargill is to the southwest. In February 1999, a #cairn was dedicated in Glencoe to commemorate the 1692 #MassacreOfGlencoe.

LOCAL AND GENERAL
…
That quaint member of the feathered tribe, the little grey owl, is becoming fairly common in the western district of #Southland, his sudden shrieking call being heard towards evening and occasionally in broad daylight. These birds are welcomed as friends by the farmer, as since their advent the ranks of the audacious grain-devouring sparrow have been markedly, thinned.

DAIRY INDUSTRY
PAYING EXPENSES AND A LITTLE OVER.
(BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.)
INVERCARGILL, 7th April.
In beautiful weather Mr. Massey was to-day motored through the fertile western district…. He opened the #Thornbury dairy factory, one of the largest in New Zealand. In doing so, he said that as a picture of agricultural prosperity #Southland at the present time would be very hard to beat. He welcomed anything that would promote the welfare of the dairying industry in New Zealand, and such an occasion as the present made him feel sure that development here would be surprisingly rapid. He was out to encourage the producers and production…. He had not the faintest anxiety so long as the producers were doing fairly well and paying their expenses with a little over for themselves. He believed that in five years all the dairy producers in the country would be supplied with electricity.

Apparently the Northern Southland transport yard in Lumsden is on fire with gas cyclinders (?) exploding. The fire brigade is on the case.
