Miguel Afonso Caetano<p>"Trump supporters have a remarkable ability to coalesce around whatever explanation they are told to repeat, so the arguments defending the detention are likely to orient around this justification. The idea that Khalil’s views might have “serious adverse foreign policy consequences” for the United States is an obvious pretext for expelling him—and a message to others who might hold or express similar beliefs. Trumpists simply do not approve of his politics and have therefore resorted to using the power of the state to deport him. Trump has styled himself a champion of free speech, but this is what Trumpists mean by “free speech”: You can say what Trumpists want you to say or you can be punished.</p><p>Trump has announced as much, declaring that the administration would not tolerate “pro-terrorist, anti-Semitic, anti-American activity.” That is an admission that Khalil’s arrest is not about consequences for American foreign policy but about punishing speech<br>(...)<br>Due process is a cornerstone of democracy and the rule of law. Without it, anyone can be arbitrarily deprived of life or liberty. Leaders who aspire to absolute power always begin by demonizing groups that lack the political power to resist, and that might be awkward for the political opposition to defend. They say someone is a criminal, and they dare you to defend the rights of criminals. They say someone is a deviant, and they dare you to defend the rights of deviants. They call someone a terrorist, and they dare you to defend the rights of terrorists. And if you believe none of these apply to you, another category might be “traitor,” the label that Trump and his advisers, including the far-right billionaire Elon Musk, like to give to anyone who opposes them."</p><p><a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2025/03/mahmoud-khalil-ice-detention/682001/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/</span><span class="invisible">2025/03/mahmoud-khalil-ice-detention/682001/</span></a></p><p><a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/USA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>USA</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Trump" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Trump</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/FreeSpeech" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>FreeSpeech</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/StudentActivism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>StudentActivism</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Authoritarianism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Authoritarianism</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Censorship" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Censorship</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Democracy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Democracy</span></a></p>

Miguel Afonso Caetano<p>"Days after immigration officers arrested a prominent pro-Palestinian campus activist, administrators at Columbia University gathered students and faculty from the journalism school and issued a warning.</p><p>Students who were not U.S. citizens should avoid publishing work on Gaza, Ukraine and protests related to their former classmate’s arrest, urged Stuart Karle, a First Amendment lawyer and adjunct professor. With about two months to go before graduation, their academic accomplishments — or even their freedom — could be at risk if they attracted the ire of the Trump administration.</p><p>“If you have a social media page, make sure it is not filled with commentary on the Middle East,” he told the gathering in Pulitzer Hall. When a Palestinian student objected, the journalism school’s dean, Jelani Cobb, was more direct about the school’s inability to defend international students from federal prosecution.</p><p>“Nobody can protect you,” Mr. Cobb said. “These are dangerous times.”</p><p>For the past two academic years, student protests against the war in Gaza have forced Columbia into a high-stakes balancing act between the competing demands of free speech and student safety."</p><p><a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/03/12/nyregion/columbia-university-trump-protests.html" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">nytimes.com/2025/03/12/nyregio</span><span class="invisible">n/columbia-university-trump-protests.html</span></a></p><p><a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/USA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>USA</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/NYC" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>NYC</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Trump" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Trump</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/ColumbiaUniversity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ColumbiaUniversity</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/StudentActivism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>StudentActivism</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/FreeSpeech" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>FreeSpeech</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Israel" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Israel</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Palestine" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Palestine</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Gaza" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Gaza</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/HumanRights" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>HumanRights</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Genocide" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Genocide</span></a></p>
Miguel Afonso Caetano<p>"The Trump administration’s outrageous attempt to punish a protester for protesting should be met with universal condemnation by everyone who wishes to live in a free society. If you don’t want them to be able to do it to you, you shouldn’t let them get away with doing it to Mahmoud Khalil. Some politicians have spoken out against the administration’s actions. Others like New York City Mayor Eric Adams (and would-be mayor Andrew Cuomo) have been deafeningly silent. The Anti-Defamation League, which should be highly sensitive to creeping abuses of state power, actually endorsed the deportation effort, saying that they “appreciate the Trump Administration’s broad, bold set of efforts to counter campus antisemitism — and this action further illustrates that resolve by holding alleged perpetrators responsible for their actions.” But there is no evidence that Khalil has engaged in any antisemitism, nor is it clear what he’s the “alleged perpetrator” of. Fortunately, many other, more genuine civil rights and civil liberties organizations have immediately condemned the action."</p><p><a href="https://www.currentaffairs.org/news/the-most-dictatorial-action-so-far" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">currentaffairs.org/news/the-mo</span><span class="invisible">st-dictatorial-action-so-far</span></a></p><p><a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/USA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>USA</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Trump" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Trump</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Deportation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Deportation</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Israel" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Israel</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Palestine" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Palestine</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/ColumbiaUniversity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ColumbiaUniversity</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Genocide" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Genocide</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/HumanRights" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>HumanRights</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/StudentActivism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>StudentActivism</span></a></p>

Miguel Afonso Caetano<p>"Words can’t express how disgusted I am with Trump supporters who defend their president stomping out speech rights for Israel after spending years wailing about the loss of free speech in America. It’s beyond mere political differences. I don’t respect them as people.</p><p>Of all the pathetic, groveling, bootlicking positions anyone could possibly espouse, it’s hard to imagine one more egregious than twisting yourself into cognitive knots trying to find ways to excuse a president crushing free speech in your country to advance the interests of a foreign state after spending years yelling “America First” and whining about freedom of speech, just because that President happens to be a Republican.</p><p>If you are doing this, you’re just admitting that you don’t stand for anything, and you’re just drifting along with the herd and supporting whatever the man in charge tells you to support. That's freedom of speech circa 2025 in the USA!!! </p><p>"They are using the completely fictional narrative of “antisemitism” on university campuses to stomp out protests against Israeli atrocities in the United States. Miguel Afonso Caetano<p>"A central part of the student’s lawsuit is that the university violated its own rules by handling the students’ disciplinary process through the Center for Student Success and Intervention (CSSI) rather than the University Judicial Board (UJB), which is composed of and accountable to a democratically elected body in the university senate whose members include a mixture of administrative staff, faculty and students. The UJB administers the Rules of University Conduct, which were set up specifically to deal with student protests following the university’s handling of anti-war protests in 1968. Under the CSSI process, students do not have the right to an attorney and are unable to bring witnesses to speak on the record. According to the congressional report investigating antisemitism on campuses, “moving the cases to the UJB would almost certainly result in significantly weaker punishments than CSSI.” The University Senate also raised concerns in the spring about CSSI handling disciplinary actions over student protests.</p><p>In addition to barring the students from campus and classes during the interim suspension, the order also said they had 24 hours to vacate their housing which was leased to them by the university. The complaint states that the university violated New York state law by not giving the students a 30-day notice of their eviction.</p><p>“I was worried about where I was going to live, how I was going to sustain myself. I was worried about losing access to my healthcare, which I rely on for doctor visits and medication that are very essential to living,” Parisi said. “I was overwhelmed with emotions. And quite frankly, I was experiencing a lot of fear of the uncertainty of what's going to happen to my life.”"</p><p><a href="https://www.dropsitenews.com/p/columbia-students-sue-university-palestine-activism" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">dropsitenews.com/p/columbia-st</span><span class="invisible">udents-sue-university-palestine-activism</span></a></p><p><a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/USA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>USA</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Universities" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Universities</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/HigherEd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>HigherEd</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/ColumbiaUniversity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ColumbiaUniversity</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Palestine" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Palestine</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/StudentActivism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>StudentActivism</span></a></p>
