An interesting piece here on difference between human and other species' #cultural complexity, highlighting the aspect of #diversity.

True enough, but this is not dealing with the #symbolic, the shared #imaginary. Humans share their dreams about things that don't exist. Crows, chimps, elephants, whales, they don't.

Reality "doesn't exist" for people who are slaves. It takes courage, furtive silence and a rage against the other slaves who also lie about reality to summon the iron-fisted conviction to speak the truth, even within our own minds.

But this nature of our existence, our connection to the roots of our evolution, our connection to the ideas of morality and virtue, our connection to the child-like honesty of not fearing consequences, is ground into dust, quite wisely I'm sure, by our fellow slaves, our parents, our co-workers and our neighbors.

I'm not too optimistic that grafting out of our slave existence is likely in the near future.
