#DVD is notable for taking a bunch of difficult/impossible problems with #VHS / #Betamax #videotape and making them…easy.

Example: freeze frame. With tape, it's almost an oxymoron. You get a video signal by passing tape over the head. If you stop the tape, you don't get a freeze frame; you get no signal.

But playing a DVD involves loading each frame from disc into RAM, from which it is then scanned out to the screen. Want to freeze frame? Easy: stop doing that. The last frame's still in RAM.
