#APS is requiring screen time for students in the 2025-26 school year (more mandatory screen time for #intervention #students, which is madness). Teachers in the trenches know that this is a terrible move - here’s a summary of the extensive evidence (made available for free from #UNESCO )that screen-free instruction from a skillful teacher is more important than digitizing #learning.

If you are at the #APS March Meeting this Thursday, I will be speaking at the end of Session MAR-S07 about the carbon and tesseract code results from the collaboration between @microsoft.com and @quantinuum.bsky.social (arXiv:2404.02280 arXiv:2409.04628) including some new exciting data! I hope to see you there!

American Physical Society #APSGlobalSummit25 in Anaheim:

From our group there will be three talks at this largest physics conference in the world.

Enter En-Roads, a climate simulator built in part by MIT Sloan. Based on the best available science, it allows users to explore the impact of various policies and sustainability measures on our climate all with the Paris Agreement’s 1.5C goal in mind. It's been used by decision makers in governments, businesses, NGOs, and even the academe, including former US Secretary of State John Kerry

Happy clot day to all who celebrate! I was diagnosed with a massive saddle #PulmonaryEmbolism on the 9th of March 2021 and arrived at the local ER a few hours shy of death at best. It's generally thought that I developed a #DVT after a high ankle sprain while exercising at home (and tripping over a cat toy that further aggravated it). I never had "The Vid" even to this day five years into it (proceeds to knock on every nearby wooden surface).

I was diagnosed with antiphospholipid syndrome afterwards and that this is why a mild injury turned into a life-threatening event.

1. Self-portrait of the artist near death at the local emergency room.

2. A pasta lunch with rubbery meatball.

3. No idea. I think it was supposed to be pulled pork but it tasted like a mouthful of salt.

4. I felt like Jesse Pinkman spending months in captivity as I was preparing to go home five days later.

Update. The American Physical Society (#APS, @apsphysics) is running a survey on the impact of cuts to US science #funding. Please take it if you're affected or likely to be affected.
apsphysics.fillout.com/t/6ESUv

"This survey collects stories showcasing the transformative positive impact of #NSF, #NIST, #DOE, #NASA, and #DOD-funded research and programs as well as what would be lost if support for basic research evaporates. You can document your experiences and share how recent executive actions have impacted you. Individual stories will be only be used publicly with permission or when fully anonymized."

I want to know #HowManyDied.

#Robodebt.

I see 10 deaths occured in a far smaller group of CentreLink dependents who'd wrongfully had their benefits cut off.

(This may be #BureaucraticManslaughter. The government kept it a secret too.)

Can you imagine the effects on your mental health of being a #APS #PublicServant and having to cut vulnerable folk's finanances off? And if you knew it was because the system was broken?

I read that people who are good CEOs can go into a room of 200 people who hate them and convince them that sacking staff is the way to go. And also have them feeling that the CEO is a reasonable guy/woman.

I doubt evaluations made by people like those 200.

I'll also point at the widespread failures of #APS members around #RoboDebt, the failures of commissioners, the recently revealed deaths of 10 who'd had benefits improperly stopped, ...

Unimpressed with that union.

The American Physical Society came out with an excellent report on Carbon Dioxide Reduction (CDR) technology. It's grounded in the physics. They recommend to continuing research into these systems, because they think there will be a need for them. But they also recommend that the focus should be on cutting carbon dioxide emmissions because that is more direct.
