> Twenty-two students, all of whom, like me, had been cleared of any criminal wrongdoing, were either expelled, suspended for years, or had their hard-earned degrees revoked on the same day—all for allegedly occupying a building that has been occupied at least four times throughout Columbia’s history.

The Nation · Columbia Expelled Me for My Palestine Activism, but I Won’t Be SilencedAnd neither will anyone else targeted by the university. We are not afraid, we are undeterred, and we will continue to fight.

“What the students did at #Columbia University was deeply inspiring to me, on really every level. But it came at this point in the genocide in Gaza that I think a lot of us were feeling a certain fatigue around. What can we do, our voices?”

Google DocsLet Gabby Graduate!Gabrielle (Gabby) Wimer is a 4th year medical student and President of the Class of 2025 at Columbia Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. On March 5th, over 50 students carried out a peaceful sit-in on Barnard's campus. The sit-in was held to demand the reinstatement of Columbia and Barnard students who were expelled for speaking out against the ongoing genocide in Gaza. Members of the sit-in renamed the Milstein Library after Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, a Palestinian pediatrician, who is currently being detained and tortured by Israel. Despite the non-violent nature of the demonstration, nine individuals were arrested, most sustained injuries from officers of the New York Police Department, and one was hospitalized. On March 7th, Gabby was placed on interim suspension by Columbia University based on allegations that she violated school policies during the events of March 5th. Columbia’s suspension of Gabby is part of the pattern of repression of students who speak out against the ongoing genocide in Gaza. The violence committed by the Israeli military in Gaza has been relentless and indiscriminate, attacking humanitarian aid trucks, healthcare workers, and children while simultaneously destroying healthcare facilities. Since October 2023, more than 50,000 Palestinians - nearly all of them civilians and 20,000 of them children - have been killed. Twenty of Gaza's 36 hospitals have been completely destroyed and less than one-third of all primary health centers are functional. As Dr. Tammy Abughnanim, an EM physician from Chicago volunteering in Gaza, said “Any healthcare worker who is not appalled by this and shocked by this and enraged by this deserves to put their stethoscope down and retract their Hippocratic oath and stop working in healthcare at this point, because what is even the point of you advocating for human life if you can’t advocate for the safety of your colleagues let alone your patients.” Gabby strives to be this type of advocate. She has matched into her dream Emergency Medicine residency program but Columbia refuses to let her return to class, claiming that she is a danger to campus. This could not be further from the truth. Gabby has spent her time in medical school advocating for her peers. As an M1 she was Programming co-Chair of the Human Rights and Asylum Clinic and helped train hundreds of volunteers to prepare affidavits for asylum seekers. As an Equity and Justice Fellow, she worked with students and faculty to improve the curriculum to be more representative and to prepare us to take care of diverse patient populations. She also ran the Public Health Commute to make sure that medical students understood the public health context of the medicine that we learn. Gabby has also been an active member of Columbia’s chapter of White Coats for Black Lives, has helped organize city-wide lobby days for medical students so they can learn about political organizing, and has served as a mentor to younger medical students. She volunteers with the the Behavioral Health Clinic taking care of Spanish-speaking patients who wouldn't have access to mental health care otherwise and is a Senior Clinician with CoSMO, a student-run free clinic. This year, Gabby has worked as co-Joint Clinic manager of the five student-run free clinics at Columbia to ensure that, despite the fear and uncertainty in these times, students are able to keep caring for the most vulnerable members of our community. Columbia’s suspension of Gabby has barred her from continuing this work that so many of our community members rely upon. Gabby has stood up for our community time and time again. Now is our time to stand up for her. Sign below to call upon Columbia University to allow Gabby to graduate this semester!
