Finished Careless People last night. It’s a really compelling read, continually surprising and horrifying. The author is certainly complicit by her involvement and naïveté, but at least she gave us this view from the inside. I finally did it. I deleted my Facebook. And let me tell you, it feels damn good. No more Zuckerberg surveillance. No more algorithmic manipulation. No more feeding the Meta machine.
I’ve been side-eyeing Facebook for years. So many red flags. The data privacy scandals? The algorithmic radicalization? The way they’ve let misinformation run rampant while punishing independent creators? It’s all been a mess. But these last few months Zuckerberg finally gave me the last straw: Rolling Back DEI Initiatives – Because apparently, making sure your workplace isn’t a toxic boys’ club is just too much for poor Mark. Getting Cozy with Trump – Yep, Zuck is making moves to rehabilitate the very guy whose Facebook-fueled propaganda machine led to an insurrection. His Weird Comments About Masculinity – Talking about how men today need to be “tougher” and “more resilient” while ignoring the fact that actual resilience isn’t about performing macho nonsense—it’s about emotional intelligence, accountability, and standing up for what’s right. And let’s not forget the giant flashing red light that is Facebook’s business model—which thrives on hoarding your data, exploiting your attention, and profiting off division and misinformation. So yeah, I’m out. And honestly? You should think about it too. There are better places to be online. Places where you aren’t the product. Places where your data isn’t up for auction. Places where you can actually build community without being force-fed toxic content for engagement. Meta can keep their shady algorithms, their billionaire ego trips, and their surveillance state. When I posted this article in 2022, Facebook wasn't as filled with AI slop and its founder wasn't MAGA. So, with my weak morals, I recreated a smaller account meant for family and friends. But now I realize there's nothing on that platform I need or want.
I finally managed to delete my FB account. The last straw came yesterday when my niece saw an account set up in the name of her deceased brother come up as someone "you might know." She reported it and got the response that the obviously fake account would not be taken down because, while it "might be upsetting," it didn't violate community standards. FB is irredeemable garbage. #DeleteFacebook
@tedcurran I have always used Facebook to talk to my IRL connections vs. Twitter to talk with the wider public and interesting strangers. Great to know that #Mastodon lets you consciously limit posts to your "followers-only", so as long as you curate who you let follow you, you have reasonable control over your #privacy. "Unlisted" and "mentioned-only" give you even more fine grain control. Anyone trying to #deletefacebook could recreate that cozy campfire feeling with just friends.

Obviously the best way is to delete your accounts outright, but I understand not everyone can do that. So at least take away some of the revenue they earn on you, and reclaim a tiny bit of privacy.
