A quotation from Nicolas Chamfort

Weak men are the light troops in the army of the wicked. They do more harm than the main force; they overrun and and ravage the country.

[Les gens faibles sont les troupes légères de l’armée des méchans. Ils font plus de mal que l’armée même; ils infestent et ils ravagent.]

Nicolas Chamfort (1741-1794) French writer, epigrammist (b. Nicolas-Sébastien Roch)
Products of Perfected Civilization [Produits de la Civilisation Perfectionée], Part 1 “Maxims and Thoughts [Maximes et Pensées],” ch. 2, ¶ 133 (1795) [tr. Mathers (1926)]

Dr Zamode, I am disgusted as well. But the UK with its current and previous maladministrations really do not care. I don't know who they are more scared of (and they might be linked), the USA or Israel.

Whatever, morality and consciences went out of the door a long time ago.

Manchmal stehe ich vor dem ganzen Zeug und bin überwältigt. Wie weit wir gekommen sind, seit ich vor 20 Jahren mit Linux angefangen hat!

layperson #linguistincs, #languagelearning, #alttext, and unexpected learning through #enablement

having only spoken english growing up, i've always found noun/subject before adjective/modifier word ordering to be a challenge and a little baffling to me. when you're not used to it, saying "that's a dog big" feels like when you expect another stair step to be there but it isn't.

it just clicked for me tho. for some reason, i connected it to writing alt text for photos. often, i'll immediately establish the most salient subject(s) + maybe the setting ("a small child and a dog at a busy outdoors market") and then add more and more detail about those, what they're doing, other features, etc ("the dog is much bigger than the child and is licking their face, causing them to stumble backwards. an older kid in the background is pointing and laughing, but everyone else seem to be walking around or looking at stalls without noticing.")

and i realized that subject-modifier is doing something similar. i mean, in english i can say shit like "two enormous, dark red, oval shaped, antique, pristine, intricately carved, absolutely gorgeous, wooden tables" and you're sitting there for 30 seconds going "wtf are you telling me about". subject-modifier gives you something concrete up front and builds upon it, rather than various features that snap together at the end

so yeah, subject-modifier seems dope now, def a feature i can get behind.... dunno if that'll help it feel more natural/easy, but at least i'm into it

also this is just one of the infinite examples of how everyone's enriched by helping enable people to access, participate, and share in spaces, conversations, stories, media, etc. 💜 and gotta love when unexpected, oblique connections help with an old problem

Been writing about #DeveloperProductivity a lot lately. Fascinating topic but also a bit worried it'll backfire and become Big Brother on these already overworked creative workers. #Burnout galore! That's why I really enjoyed Anna Daugherty’s focus on team delivery #enablement over individual #productivity. Team-based velocity is a key #DevOps and #PlatformEngineering goal anyway!

Excellent example of how science will often minimalize and enable further destruction and deaths. Understatements: “likely” climate change “is a thumb on the scale” of cause.
Beware of ‘money-enabled and politically cautious science.’
