@science 2/2 BTW, I usually reject empty accounts: how can I know if you are a propaganda fake or a spam bot?

I'm using the #toot app and very much appreciating the function that hides replies and comments from my (local) feed.

I can't seem to be able to do the same in the federated feed tho, and this really bothers me to the point that I don't look there at all, since I can't easily follow the conversations that pop up without context.

I tried to find another app but I'm using an old-ish iPhone 6, meaning that e.g. IceCubes is not available, among others.

Any tips on how to work around it?

New release of #FediAlgo (customizable #algorithm for your #Mastodon timeline) has a couple of cool features:

1. Configuration presets (so you can easily put discussions or trending toots at the top of your #timeline without fiddling with the individual settings)

2. A "What's Trending" section that will show you the top trending hashtags, links, and posts scraped from 30 or so of the most popular Mastodon servers

All the old features like filtering for particular languages / hashtags / users or a minimum number of replies / boosts / etc. are still there.

For now you still need to use the command line to run it (it's easy tho). If there's interest I can deploy the demo publicly.

If you're using the Fediverse's reading platform BookWyrm, here's how to transfer your data from Goodreads, LibraryThing, StoryGraph, OpenLibrary or Calibre:

Update: test complete! Thank you all for helping 🩷

This was a test of content warning mechanics.

Findings:
- The search tab trending system excludes posts with content warnings from trending.
- Posting, and then editing to add a CW, also stops a post from trending.
- Removing the CW later will make the post eligible for trending again.

Note: I did not test if adding a CW would remove an *already* trending post from the trending list.

Thoughts: The way trending formula interacts with content warnings actively discourages accessibility by creating a situation where reach and accessibility considerations are at odds.

@Mika If you post an image, please put an image description on it so that blind and vision impaired people can know what's going on.

If there's any questions about how the whole thing works, some useful hashtags are: #FediTips, #AskFedi and just generally asking around. Since we don't all follow some very loose "free speech" corporate rules, there's next to no toxicity here, and if there does happen to be any, reporting them actually does something because it's moderated by cool people.

If you ever have trouble accessing your Mastodon account, you can always email your server's admin to ask for help:

1. Go to your server’s website
2. If you're on mobile, click the ⋯ icon on the right, if you're on computer click the “About” link at the bottom left. (Note that there are two “About” links on the desktop website, click the one next to your server’s name.)
3. Your admin’s public email address is listed under “Contact” near the top of the page

It's really important to add text descriptions when you're posting images, video or audio files. However, it's not always easy to remember to do it, so there is a special account which reminds you if you forget:

➡️ @PleaseCaptionBot

Just follow the account, and it will follow you back and DM you if you post something without a description.

To stop getting reminders, unfollow the account, then block and unblock it so that it unfollows you.

If someone's profile looks blank on here, don't assume it is actually blank. Some accounts, especially newer ones or ones with few followers, may look blank even if they aren't.

There's more info about this, why it happens and how to check what the profile really looks like in the guide:

You can prevent your own account ever looking blank to anyone by pinning up to five posts or five threads on your profile:

It's Monday, and it's a holiday for a lot of us. I mean, not me, but a lot of us. If you're doomscrolling, stop doing that and go say hi to folks on the introduction hashtag! You'll be happier if you do, I promise.
