The admin of startrek.website reached out to me - guessing because of this thread? And seems responsive enough so I’ve removed the block and will work with them on any new issues that arise. Apologies for the trouble.

Personally, I don't mind waiting for the software to catch up (user-level instance blocks) if that makes your life easier, but I don't know how representative I am or how long that wait will be.

I can't speak for @jerry, but I wonder if the situation could change as the Mbin software evolves. Currently, we don't have user-level instance blocks on Mbin, a feature which does exist over on Lemmy. There is already a high-priority feature request for this to be added to Mbin.

Once users can self-select what instances they want to block, instance-wide defederations could in theory be more relaxed, as questionably-objectionable instances can be handled with user-side blocks rather than the current setup where defederation is really the only option.

Another thing that some Lemmy instances have done (@Blaze, you're everywhere, help me out; do you know where I might have seen this?) is setting up a default block list on the user-side. This is effectively an instance-wide defederation that individual users can elect to reverse, allowing another level of handling for problem instances. Ultimately, users win when admins have more options than full defederation available to them.

Do we know why startrek.website is defederated? I'm not disputing it, I just don't know what the history is. Checking them out, they look like a pretty generic single(-ish)-purpose instance around sci-fi TV (mainly Star Trek and Doctor Who).

The problem is related to a periodic denial of service caused by lots of hits to the login page, which is an extremely expensive operation and exhausts php processes for other things like what you’re seeing.
