The most common questions asked by new people on here seem to be about how to make more connections with other accounts. Here are a couple of guides that might help:
How do I discover accounts to follow on Mastodon and the Fediverse? https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-find-accounts-to-follow-on-mastodon-and-the-fediverse-how-do-i-find-my-friends
How do I make my own account and posts more discoverable? https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-get-more-followers-on-mastodon-and-the-fediverse
You don't have to do all the suggestions on the lists, but the more you do the more effectively you'll make connections with others.

If a post isn't in your native language (or a language you can read) there's nearly always a 'translate' option under the post.
Account verification works totally differently on the Fediverse. The most popular method is to link to your own website from your profile and then use Mastodon's verification system to prove you own the site. Once the link is verified it turns green to prove you're the owner.
There are complete instructions for verifying your account at:
https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-verify-my-account
If it doesn't work, there are also lots of troubleshooting tips in the same guide, below the instructions.
Is it possible to create a timeline based on all or some of the hashtags one follows?
Is there any way to set up automatic cross-posting between 2 separate Mastodon accounts (on different instances)? All I can find is tools that let you cross-post to other platforms like Bluesky, X, etc.
I can only think of maybe 2 specific use cases myself, so perhaps no one's bothered to make a tool for this... Or maybe I'm missing some really obvious solution?
Moin.
@stman
Can you please do me a favour and stop flooding my @mentions? I used to do this to everyone I talked to at length too. Until someone pointed out to me that it can be avoided, by only including @mentions in the first post of a thread. I'll click on it to check context before replying, especially if I see a number like 1/9 or 1/? (which is why my threads always have these).

@johnmezzo I just follow a lot of people. Some I followed on Twitter, but most are new. If you really want followers, post your cat, dog, lizard, or moss photos, lol.
There are usually estimated to be more than 12 million active users on the fediverse, and it's slowly growing. Mastodon servers are about 70% or so of that. My private server is mastodon, but I could run GoToSocial, Misskey, Lemmy, Pixelfed, or many others.
There's #FediTips for ideas and #FediHelp for ideas on a lot of things (not just the fediverse). The @FediTips user is good to follow. You might already.
It seemed a little slow when I started, but now it definitely is not. YMMV.
Just a reminder from the Fediverse that you can control what you see from a person you follow.
If you have a public Mastodon account and want to reach the widest possible audience, you should opt into the full text search system:
1. Log into your server’s website
2. Go to your profile
3. Click "Edit Profile"
4. Click on "Privacy & Reach" tab at the top
5. Scroll down to section marked "Search"
6. Tick box marked "Include public posts in search results"
7. Click "Save Changes" button at bottom of the screen

A general question: I've set a filter to only see posts in certain languages, but then I also follow some hashtags.
The language filter works well, but if I follow a hashtag like #FOSS I would see posts in languages I've filtered.
Is there a way to solve this issue?
You can optionally set Mastodon to ignore any DMs from accounts you don't follow:
1. Log onto your server’s website or web app
2. Click Notifications
3. Click in top right corner of the Notifications section
4. In "Unsolicited private mentions" click the dropdown menu and select "Ignore"
5. When the confirmation box appears, click "Ignore notifications"
If you activate this, you may want to mention it in your profile so people realise their DMs won't get to you.
(2/?)
But the best way to avoid Thing Y in your feeds is to not follow people who tend to post or boost it. If you don't want to see it in local/ federated feeds either, join a server whose community shares that desire to avoid it. That way if trolls @mention you with Thing Y posts, you're more likely to get them Silenced by the mods on your server, and if necessary the servers that host them.
Does your Mastodon timeline seem too busy? Does it feel like you are following too many people?
If so, you might want to use Mastodon's Lists feature. Lists let you take accounts off your main timeline and put them into their own themed mini-timelines which you can browse separately. Find out all about how to use Lists at:

:)
