More than just a traditional gathering, the powwow allowed two-spirit individuals to celebrate their identities and honor their place in Indigenous culture.</p><p>“'This (powwow) is a perfect example of a <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/SafeSpace" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SafeSpace</span></a> for people to come and dance in whatever category they want to dance in, dress the way that they feel good about themselves, love who they want to love, and they are safe here. Bill to ban <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/trans" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>trans</span></a> athletes from girls’ and women’s sports teams fails to advance in Senate</p><p>By STEPHEN GROVES<br>Updated 7:27 PM EST, March 3, 2025</p><p>WASHINGTON (AP) — "Legislation that aimed to bar transgender women and girls nationwide from participating in school athletic competitions designated for female athletes failed to advance Monday night in a divided Senate as Democrats stood united against an issue that Republicans leveraged in last year’s elections.</p><p>"A test vote on the bill failed to gain the 60 votes needed to advance in the chamber as senators stuck to party lines in a 51-45 vote tally.</p><p>"The bill sought to determine <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/TitleIX" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>TitleIX</span></a> protections 'based solely on a person’s reproductive biology and genetics at birth.' "The mother of Nex Benedict — the #NonBinary #Oklahoma teen who was assaulted in a school bathroom and died the following day — is raising doubts about statements released by the local police. On Wednesday, the Owasso Police posted a statement to the department's Facebook page, which appeared to defend the Owasso High School's response to the February 7 incident. The statement also suggested that Nex's death the following day was unrelated to the bathroom assault. In a text exchange with Popular Information, Sue Benedict, Nex's mother, said she considered the Owasso Police statement a "big cover" and believed it was only released as "something to calm the people."
"Benedict said the Owasso Police did not contact her before releasing the statement, which included "preliminary information from the medical examiner’s office." According to the statement, although the medical examiner has not made a determination about the cause of death, the preliminary information "indicated that the decedent [Nex Benedict] did not die as a result of trauma."
"Separately, an attorney representing Nex Benedict's family released a statement that the facts of the case "are troubling at best." The attorney said that not all the facts have been released to the public and that the family would conduct its own investigation, including "independently interviewing witnesses and collecting all available evidence."
