If Pixelfed offers you to log into it with your Mastodon credentials, that's just a "smoke screen" to make that corner of the Fediverse feel easier to use for newbies and clueless users.<br><br>The closest thing to federated authentication in the Fediverse is <a href="https://magicsignon.org/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">OpenWebAuth magic single sign-on</a>. It was created in 2018 or 2019 by @<a class="" href="https://fediversity.site/channel/mikedev" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Mike Macgirvin 🖥️</a>, also creator of the Facebook alternative <a href="https://joinfediverse.wiki/Friendica" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Friendica</a> and its own fork, the social network-cum-cloud storage-cum-CMS-cum-groupware server <a href="https://joinfediverse.wiki/Hubzilla" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Hubzilla</a> and inventor of <a href="https://joinfediverse.wiki/Nomadic_identity" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">nomadic identity</a>.<br><br>It does not provide you with full-blown user rights on instances on which you don't have a user account, though. It works like this: You're logged into your home instance which supports OpenWebAuth in a standard Web browser. In the same browser, you open another instance that supports OpenWebAuth. That instance recognises your login, it recognises you as you, and it may grant you certain permissions. For example, one of your contacts may have set their profile to private, and only certain contacts of theirs are allowed to see it. You are allowed. So when you visit their profile on their home instance, you are recognised, and you are allowed to see the profile. Only one example.<br><br>However: OpenWebAuth is only fully implemented on Mike's own creations Hubzilla, <a href="https://codeberg.org/streams/streams" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">(streams)</a> and <a href="https://codeberg.org/fortified/forte" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Forte</a>. Fully implemented means that the instances of these recognise logins, and logins on these instances are recognised elsewhere. Friendica has only got a client-side implementation, i.e. Friendica logins are recognised on Hubzilla, (streams) and Forte.<br><br>Mastodon does not have OpenWebAuth in any shape or form, and it most likely never will. There is actually a pull request on GitHub for implementing client-side OpenWebAuth on Mastodon. It hasn't been touched in years, so it's safe to assume that it was silently rejected. Jupiter Rowland@<a href="https://dresden.network/@sufloese" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Susanne Schneider</a> Also, <a href="https://joinfediverse.wiki/Hubzilla" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Hubzilla</a> (<a href="https://hubzilla.org" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">offizielle Website</a>) ist das größte Featuremonster im ganzen Fediverse mit wahrscheinlich der steilsten Lernkurven im ganzen Fediverse. Außerdem ist es eines der älteren Projekte im Fediverse: Es kam erstmals im März 2015 raus, also noch zehn Monate vor Mastodon.<br><br>Um's kurz zu machen: <a href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/item/0a75de76-eb27-4149-b708-f20b2f79d392" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Hier</a> habe ich mal eine Anzahl an Tabellen angelegt mit Vergleichen zwischen<br><ul><li>Mastodon</li><li>Friendica (wovon Hubzilla technisch gesprochen schon 2012 geforkt wurde; ursprünglich vom selben Entwickler wie Hubzilla)</li><li>Hubzilla</li><li>(streams) (Fork eines Forks dreier Forks eines Forks (eines Forks?) von Hubzilla von 2021, wieder vom selben Entwickler)</li></ul><br>Es ist auf eine Art eine Facebook-Alternative. Aber nur deshalb, weil es ein Fork von <a href="https://joinfediverse.wiki/Friendica" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Friendica</a> vom selben Schöpfer ist, das tatsächlich vor fast 15 Jahren explizit als Facebook-Alternative an den Start ging. Aber es ist kein Facebook-<em>Klon</em>, auch deshalb nicht, weil es sehr, sehr viel mehr kann als Facebook.<br><br>Posts können da ganz anders sein als auf Mastodon. Du hast ein Zeichenlimit von über 16,7 Millionen. Du bist auch nicht beschränkt auf nur vier Bilder als Dateianhänge, sondern du kannst beliebig viele Bilder an beliebiger Stelle in die Posts einbauen, also mit Text darüber und Text darunter (wobei Mastodon dann doch nur vier davon als Dateianhänge anzeigen wird). Dabei lädt man die Bilder auch nicht in irgendein Datennirwana hoch wie auf Mastodon, sondern in den Cloudspeicher, der zum eigenen Kanal gehört. Den kann man sogar per WebDAV als externes Laufwerk einbinden.<br><br>Dazu hast du alles, was HTML an Textformatierung unterstützt, von Fett- und Kursivschrift über sechs Überschriften, sechs Arten von Listen und eingebetteten Links bis hin zu Tabellen. Auf Hubzilla kann man mehr Textformatierung erzeugen, als Mastodon anzeigen kann. Allerdings werden Posts mit BBcode formatiert, das man vielleicht noch aus Internetforen aus den 2000ern und 2010ern kennt. Auf Hubzilla ist BBcode mit haufenweise Zusatzfeatures erweitert. Auch deshalb ist Hubzilla eine der ganz wenigen Fediverse-Serveranwendungen, die einen Vorschau-Button haben.<br><br>Hubzilla unterstützt Post-Titel, und was auf Mastodon das CW-Feld ist, ist auf Hubzilla immer noch das, was es schon immer war: ein Feld für Zusammenfassungen.<br><br>Hubzilla hat im Prinzip alles, was ein voll ausgewachsenes Blog braucht, bis auf Pingback.<br><br>Wenn man nicht will, daß die eigenen Blogposts von Mastodon-Nutzern immer nur verstümmelt gesehen werden (oder daß man alle Naselang angeschnauzt wird, was einem denn einfällt, über 500 Zeichen in einen "Tröt" zu packen), kann man optional die Artikel-App installieren und Posts als sogenannte Artikel schreiben. Die föderieren zwar nicht, aber das sollen sie dann auch nicht, sie sind leichter auffindbar, und man kann sie in föderierten Posts einfach verlinken.<br><br>Hubzilla hat schon seit Anbeginn Gruppen, die da "Foren" heißen. Und zwar mit Moderation, mit der Option, zusätzliche Admins als Moderatoren zu bestimmen, mit der Möglichkeit, sie privat zu machen, und mit der Möglichkeit, sie aus Verzeichnissen fernzuhalten.<br><br>Für die, die Sicherheit, Privatsphäre und Berechtigungskontrolle wollen, hat Hubzilla das zweitbeste Berechtigungssystem im Fediverse (das beste gibt's auf den Hubzilla-"Nachfolgern" <a href="https://codeberg.org/streams/streams" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">(streams)</a> von 2021 und <a href="https://codeberg.org/fortified/forte" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Forte</a> von 2024, beide wieder vom selben Schöpfer, der auch weiterhin beide pflegt und weiterentwickelt). Es arbeitet auf drei Ebenen: für den ganzen Kanal, für einzelne Kontakte und für bestimmte Inhalte. Das Berechtigungssystem ist allerdings auch einer der Gründe, warum Hubzilla in der Handhabung nicht eben einfach ist.<br><br>Fast überall sonst ist das Konto gleich die Identität. Auf Hubzilla kann man auf einem Konto mehrere separate sogenannte "Kanäle" haben. Ein Kanal entspricht dabei einem kompletten Konto woanders, nur eben nicht jeweils mit eigenem Login, sondern alle Kanäle auf einem Konto haben einen gemeinsamen Login, und man kann zwischen den Kanälen hin- und herwechseln, ohne sich auszuloggen. Das ist z. B. praktisch, wenn man Kanäle für verschiedene Zwecke hat, etwa einen oder mehrere als Forum. Mastodon und fast alles andere im Fediverse nehmen die Kanäle tatsächlich als eigenständige Konten wahr.<br><br>Zusätzlich kann jeder Kanal auch noch mehrere separate Profile haben. Eins hat man immer, und das ist auch das offizielle, öffentliche Profil, sofern man das nicht auf privat schaltet. Die anderen Profile kann man jeweils Kontakten zuordnen, so daß die (wenn sie die Technologie haben; Mastodon hat sie nicht) dann ein anderes Profil zu sehen bekommen. Die Idee dahinter ist, daß man ein öffentliches Profil hat mit den Informationen, die man über sich selbst öffentlich bekannt machen will. Dann hat man ein Profil für die Saufkumpanen, eins für die Familie, eins für Arbeitskollegen, und in jedem erzählt man was anderes über sich, was die jeweils anderen und die allgemeine Öffentlichkeit nicht unbedingt wissen sollen.<br><br>Hubzilla geht aber noch weiter: Ein Kanal muß nicht unbedingt nur auf einem Konto auf einem Server lagern. Hubzilla hat etwas, das man "nomadische Identität" nennt: Man kann einen Kanal auf Konten auf anderen Servern klonen. Die Klone sind dabei aber nicht einfach nur dumme Kopien, wie wenn man mit dem Mastodon-Konto umzieht. Nein, sie sind Echtzeit-Backups, die in zwei Richtungen funktionieren und die man genau wie das Original nutzen kann. Damit kann man einen Hubzilla-Kanal hervorragend gegen plötzliche Serverschließung absichern. Selbst wenn der Server mit dem Original offline geht, kann man die Klone weiter nutzen und einen der Klone zum neuen Original erklären. (Auch hier wieder: Mastodon und fast alles andere im Fediverse sieht die Klone als eigenständige Konten.)<br><br>Daß man auch mit einem kompletten Kanal mit allem Drum und Dran sauber umziehen kann, und zwar, ohne die alte Kopie des Kanals zurückzulassen, ist davon eigentlich nur ein Nebeneffekt.<br><br>Es gibt noch einen ganzen Haufen mehr Features. Hubzilla kann als Content Management System fungieren; man kann optional darauf ganze statische Websites fahren, die formatiert werden können in BBcode, Markdown oder HTML. Kein Witz: Die offizielle Hubzilla-Website läuft auf einem Hubzilla-Kanal. Es kann auch als Groupware-Server verwendet werden mit einem CalDAV-Kalenderserver, der das Webinterface des Event-Kalenders mitbenutzt (wobei das für CalDAV nicht sehr gut ist, weil zu eingeschränkt) und einem optionalen CardDAV-Adreßbuchserver.<br><br>Man kann auf einem Hubzilla-Kanal auch beliebig viele Wikis haben mit jeweils beliebig vielen Seiten. Ja, Wikis. Zugegeben, die verwenden als Sprache auch entweder BBcode oder Markdown, also kein MediaWiki-Markup. Aber es gibt sie.<br><br>Hubzilla kann sich an sich schon mit dem Rest des Fediverse verbinden. Ich habe das hier gerade selbst von Hubzilla geschickt. <a href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/channel/jupiter_rowland" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Hier ist mein Kanal</a>, <a href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/profile/jupiter_rowland" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">hier ist mein Profil</a>, <a href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/articles/jupiter_rowland" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">meine Artikel</a>, <a href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/wiki/jupiter_rowland" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">meine Wikis</a>, und trotzdem könnt ihr das auf Mastodon lesen.<br><br>Allerdings ist Hubzilla die einzige Fediverse-Serveranwendung, bei der ActivityPub nicht nur optional ist, sondern für neue Kanäle standardmäßig abgeschaltet. @<a href="https://bildung.social/@kulturmensch" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Kulturkramkiste</a>, falls du den Schalter nicht gefunden hast: Drei-Punkte-Menü ganz rechts auf der Navbar, "Apps", "Verfügbare Apps", "ActivityPub-Protokoll" auswählen und "Installlieren" klicken. Erst dann kann sich dein Hubzilla-Kanal mit Mastodon & Co. verbinden.<br><br>@<a href="https://dresden.network/@sufloese" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Susanne Schneider</a>, wenn @<a href="https://bildung.social/@kulturmensch" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Kulturkramkiste</a> das getan hat, kopierst du das hier: <code>@kulturkramkiste@hub.netzgemeinde.eu</code>, fügst es in Mastodon bzw. in deiner Mastodon-App in die Suche ein und suchst. Idealerweise sollte @<a href="https://bildung.social/@kulturmensch" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Kulturkramkiste</a>s Kanal gefunden werden.<br><br>Zusätzlich kann Hubzilla sich übrigens optional auch mit (dem dahinsiechenden) diaspora* verbinden, man kann RSS- und Atom-Feeds abonnieren, und je nachdem, was der Admin aktiviert hat, gibt's auch noch ein paar andere Verbindungsmöglichkeiten.<br><br>Ach ja, @<a href="https://bildung.social/@kulturmensch" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Kulturkramkiste</a>, hier sind zwei Foren-Kontaktempfehlungen für Hubzilla: @<a class="" href="https://hubzilla.org/channel/adminsforum" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Hubzilla Support Forum</a> und (weniger aktiv, aber deutschsprachig) @<a class="" href="https://hub.hubzilla.hu/channel/hubzillasprechstunde" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Pepes Hubzilla-Sprechstunde</a>. Smith</a> Still, first of all, if I posted an image without an alt-text (which I'd never do), AltBot would have to <em>assume full admin rights</em> over <a href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/channel/jupiter_rowland" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">the Hubzilla channel that I'm currently commenting from</a> because that's the only way for another Fediverse actor to alter the source code of my posts.<br><br>Altering the source code of the post is necessary because Hubzilla, (streams) and Forte neither have a dedicated alt-text field, nor are images file attachments there. Rather, images are embedded directly into the post, in-line, just the same way blogs handle images. And alt-text has to be woven into the image-embedding code in the post. Tim Schlotfeldt ⚓🏳️🌈@<a href="https://systemli.social/@anneroth" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Anne Roth</a> hat <a href="https://systemli.social/@anneroth/114364277556750088" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">mit knappen Worten</a> auf einen kritischen Artikel über Mastodon hingewiesen: <a href="https://v.cx/2025/04/mastodon-exit-interview" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Mastodon Exit Interview</a>. <br><br>Der Artikel ist etwas länglich und eigentlich beschreibt der Autor Rob Shearer, warum er mit seinen Bots jetzt lieber auf #<a class="" href="https://hub.tschlotfeldt.de/search?tag=Bluesky" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Bluesky</a> ist. Er führt dafür technische und kulturelle Gründe an. Im letzten Absatz weist er dann aber darauf hin, dass Bluesky die gleichen Probleme und Risiken wie Twitter in sich birgt: „<em>But I see absolutely no reason to expect the platform to avoid the problems that Twitter encountered as it grew</em>“. Zudem ignoriert er völlig, dass auch Bluesky letztendlich das machen wird, was die Venture Kapitalisten vorgeben. In diesem Fall sind das vor allem die Crypto Bros mit ihrem Ponzi Scheme.<br><br>Aber was sind die Kritikpunkte, die ihn zum Wechsel nach Bluesky bewegt haben? Ich fasse das mal zusammen, auch wenn ich seiner Sichtweise nicht folgen mag. Insbesondere nicht, wenn einem gesellschaftliche Aspekte wichtig sind.<br><br><strong>Punkt 1: Federation does not work</strong><br>Da hat er einen guten Punkt: Die Accounts und die Inhalte verteilen sich über viele Instanzen hinweg. Es gibt da keine zentrale Suchmaschine, die dir gleich die relevanten Kurznachrichten zu einem Thema im Fediverse anzeigt. Ein förderiertes Netzwerk funktioniert ganz anders und fühlt sich darum auch ganz anders an. Dieser Unterschied ist gewollt, es ist sozusagen der Preis für die Unabhängigkeit von Big Tech.<br><br>In meinen Augen wird dieses Problem in seiner Dramatik stark überschätzt. Ja, eine Recherche ist damit umständlicher. Das macht die Arbeit beispielsweise für Journalist:innen mühsamer. Mühsamer ist aber nicht gleichbedeutend mit unmöglich.<br><br>Der Punkt birgt noch eine feine Ironie. Hierzulande wird Bluesky gerne als ernsthafte Alternative erwähnt, weil es ja eines Tages ausgerechnet die Förderation zwischen verschiedenen Instanzen ermöglichen will. <br><br><strong>Punkt 2: Account migration does not work</strong><br>Das ist auch ein guter Punkt. Das sollte Mastodon besser machen und beispielsweise Ideen von anderen Systemen wie #<a class="" href="https://hub.tschlotfeldt.de/search?tag=Hubzilla" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Hubzilla</a> übernehmen. Ich hatte dazu <a href="https://hub.tschlotfeldt.de/hq/97c9b844-761f-42ab-b61b-6bee424c7aca" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">erst letztens etwas geschrieben</a>.<br><br><strong>Punkt 3: Direct messaging does not work</strong><br>Da stimme ich auch zu. Das Handling der DMs ist schräg. In einer Fußnote erwähnt Rob allerdings, dass Bluesky ähnliche Defizite hat.<br><br><strong>Punkt 4: Content moderation does not work</strong><br>Er sieht es als ein großes Problem, dass jede Instanz eigene Regeln definieren kann, was dann eben Folgen haben kann. Seine Überzeugung stammt auch aus einer persönlichen Betroffenheit, die er allerdings nur in einer Fußnote beschreibt: „<em>… but apparently its very open speech policy led to an association with Nazis (or something) and many other instances blocked it.</em>“ Er hat erst indirekt davon erfahren, dass seine Postings von anderen Accounts nicht empfangen werden können, weil deren Server-Betreiber die Nazi-freundliche Instanz geblockt hatten.<br><br>Das könnte man jetzt aus einer gesellschaftspolitischen Warte auch anders bewerten.<br><br><strong>Punkt 5: Mastodon development does not work</strong><br>Dies begründet er damit, dass seine Punkte 1 bis 4 in der Weiterentwicklung von Mastodon nicht berücksichtigt werden :person_shrugging: <br><br><strong>Punkt 6: Mastodon culture does not work</strong><br>Das scheint ein sehr persönlicher Aspekt zu sein, den man nicht unbedingt teilen muss.
