#WordWeavers Jan 22: "Does the thought of one day dying scare your characters?"

Their whole life, until about a week ago, Ulrik thought they were going to be "retired" Logan's-Run-style at age 42, and never thought much of it. (Warborn indoctrination is all-pervasive and starts in the vat.)

However, due to recent Warborn rights activism, they've found themself retired in the more traditional sense. And just quietly, that scares the absolute shit out of them.

Two children point and whisper as UIrik and Chief Warden Amon Zola walk past, deep in conversation. Zola: "So apparently it's somehow up to me - the sheriff of Bumfuck, Nowhere - to interpret whether Warborns get 'retired' like honoured career soldiers or like obsolete military ordnance, and the whole galaxy's quietly watching." Ulrik: "Heh. Mind who you're callin' obsolete, old man! For real, though, thanks for givin' it to me straight. And for what it's worth, weren't like I was plannin' on retirement, neither. Thought I'd be recycled into nutrifeed by now."

Did somebody say #GoblinWeek?!

Here's a little intro sequence of Cap'n Savings, the dungeon vendor from a game that I reluctantly decided to cancel.

(I liked the premise, but it was a slow transformation game with random encounter order, so every time you saw the character, that meant 16 different renders, 1 for each MC form. I thought it would be okay, but once I got into it, I realised it was going to take way too much of my time.)

A naked woman in a dungeon hears a strange sound, and wonders what it is - we see a giant hairless rat coming out of a tunnel.
The rat is towing a small cart with a goblin sitting on it, dressed like a pirate. There are various goods in the back. The goblin greets the woman "Ahoy there, 'tis yer lucky day, me hearty, ye've been found by Cap'n Savings' travelling goods emporium!! Elusive quality at authentic prices, or me name ain't Cap'n Savings!"
The woman asks "IS Cap'n Savings your real name, though?" To which the goblin pirate vendor response "Tis as real as me accent, lass!"
Cap'n Savings rummages in his cart for something to sell.

Made some tweaks to these panels and I'm much happier now. It's one of the things I love about my #ICBM workflow.

I start by roughing out panels with speech bubbles on a blank background. Then I make the images and move the bubbles around to suit.

Finally, I can keep going back and tweaking the bubble positions, adjusting the tails, changing a word hear and there. Forever and ever, until everything loses all meaning 😅

(Seriously though, I love it)

Shifted Ulric's suggestion that he and Robin share a bunk to the first frame, so that the second is entirely Robin's shocked reaction, and thought bubble reading "No thoughts. Just gay."
After Ulrik says that while Robin's sleeping, he'll go and do whatever it is that retirees do, added an additional speech bubble reading "I hear good things about bingo?"
