We hold our seventieth vigil this Saturday 5th April

April 2025

The 70th vigil is to be held in Salisbury on Saturday 5th April starting at 5pm the market place near the Library. We none of us thought when we started over a year ago that we would still be holding these every Saturday come rain or shine.

This week’s news is especially awful with yet more Palestinian medical staff found dead and buried in a shallow grave in southern Gaza at least one with his hands tied. They were in clearly marked medical vehicles entering what was supposed to be a safe zone.

The programme about the West Bank on ITV the other evening was unpleasant viewing. It showed a settler gradually invading Palestinian land. What was shocking was his contempt for them and spoke in terms of clearing them away. He stopped next to some newly planted olive trees on their land and said he wasn’t going to clear them away now because the camera was on but it was obvious he would be back later.

West Bank violence is increasing, Haaretz has reported on a large number of attacks, with livestock killed or stolen and a boy in charge of a flock was recently murdered by settlers they believe. IDF soldiers are seen standing by while settlers throw stones and carry out their attacks.

Please come and support our vigil. It will not make a big difference of course and the majority walk by without pausing even a moment. But we can but try …

Israel's use of Palestinian civilians as human shields in #Gaza is a serious violation of international law. According to a whistleblower account, the practice has become systematic throughout #IDF operations, with almost every platoon forcing Palestinians to enter and clear houses ahead of soldiers—a practice called "mosquito protocol."

Despite being exposed in media months ago, the practice reportedly continued with knowledge of senior military leadership. While the IDF has opened six investigations, the officer claims this barely scratches the surface of a widespread practice that endangers innocent civilians primarily to save time rather than increase troop safety.

By all accounts, IDF soldiers just murdered 15 medics and aid workers in Rafah, many of whom were wearing Red Cross uniforms. The #IDF then tried to cover it up (and literally burry both the bodies of the dead and the ambulance vehicles).

After over 50,000 dead in #Gaza, it's hard to see this as an escalation. But if this is not the moment when our governments say, enough is enough, impose full sanctions, and see to it that war criminals are prosecuted, I honestly don't think anything will.

#Australia needs to remove #Hamas from Australia's "Listed #terrorist organisations", we need to stop endorsing Israel's attacks on CIVILIAN government run essential services in Gaza.

Israel see our "terrorist" designation of the entire Hamas moment as endorsement of their treatment of civilian emergency services as military targets – paramedics, firemen, and other people who save lives – because they are "Hamas" by being connected to government run services in Gaza.

At the very least Australia need to narrow the listing to the #Qassam Brigades militant wing of the Hamas movement. But even this would be difficult to justify. Hamas are NOT a threat to Australia, and the #IDF have killed more Australian citizens than Hamas in the current war, including a civilian from #Sydney in #Lebanon and an Australian aid worker in Gaza.

It is insane that we have condemned an entire, mostly civilian, government as #terrorists while allowing Likud – the successor party to the #Irgun and #Lehi terror groups – to drive #Israel into #genocidal fascism without equivalent consequences.

The Lehi and Irgun were definitively #terrorists – Likud first formed government under former Irgun commander Menachem Begin and his successor was former Lehi commander Yitzhak Shamir – but really the Lehi and Irgun were nowhere near as bad as the IDF.

In nemmeno due settimane di ripresa dei bombardamenti israeliani sulla striscia di Gaza, sono state uccise mille persone. I bombardamenti sono stati costanti e inarrestabili, proseguiti anche durante l’Eid al-Fitr, la festa per la fine del mese del Ramadan, una delle feste più importante e sentite per il mondo islamico.
Oggi, l’esercito israeliano va oltre, ordinando l’evacuazione della città di Rafah, nel sud della striscia di Gaza. Decine di migliaia di persone, per l’ennesima volta, hanno raccolto il poco che avevano, e a piedi o a bordo di mezzi di fortuna, hanno lasciato Rafah. Una città che durante i mesi di guerra è stata completamente rasa al suolo. Alla popolazione che durante il cessate il fuoco aveva provato a ristabilirsi lì, o che si trovavano lì nella speranza di passare il confine con l’Egitto nelle rare evacuazioni concesse, è stato ordinato di spostarsi ad Al Mawasi, una zona costiera che già era stata identificata come “zona umanitaria” dall’esercito israeliano, ma che è stata più e più volte bombardata. Al Mawasi è anche la zona dove secondo il piano israeliano per la rioccupazione di Gaza che era stato rivelato dal Financial Times negli scorsi giorni sarebbero stati confinati tutti i 2 milioni di Gazawi, prima di procedere all’espulsione.
In questi giorni di ripresa dei bombardamenti, le ong e le agenzie onu presenti nella striscia, hanno descritto una situazione umanitaria spaventosa, aggravata dal fatto che da un mese nella striscia non entra più niente: cibo, carburante, acqua, medicinali. Gli ospedali – ha detto l’Onu – sono tornati ad essere un campo di battaglia. Oggi Jonathan Whittall, il capo dell’agenzia Onu Ocha in Palestina, è tornato a parlare dei quindici paramedici palestinesi uccisi da israele. I quindici operatori sanitari sono stati uccisi una settimana fa, ma solo in questi giorni sono stati recuperati i corpi. Secondo l’ufficio per gli affari umanitari delle Nazioni Unite la Mezzaluna Rossa Palestinese e gli operatori della protezione civile erano in missione per salvare i colleghi che erano stati colpiti in precedenza nel corso della giornata, quando i loro veicoli chiaramente contrassegnati come sanitari sono finiti sotto il pesante fuoco israeliano.
Whittall, ha detto che i paramedici sono stati colpiti e uccisi uno per uno e i loro corpi sepolti in questa fossa comune.
“Li stiamo tirando fuori con le loro uniformi, con i guanti. Erano qui per salvare vite. Invece, sono finiti in una fossa comune”, ha detto Whittall. “Queste ambulanze sono state sepolte nella sabbia”. L’esercito ha ammesso di aver colpito le ambulanze perché – hanno fatto sapere – si muovevano in modo sospetto.
Secondo le Nazioni Unite, almeno 1.060 operatori sanitari sono stati uccisi nei diciotto mesi trascorsi da quando israele ha lanciato la sua offensiva a Gaza.
