'Steven Donziger, the embattled human rights attorney, has urged Joe Biden to offer him a pardon for his role in defending Indigenous tribes in Ecuador against the oil industry, where his efforts ended with him being sued by Chevron and spending time in jail and hundreds of days under house arrest'

So, hunh?
"Biden said on August 26, Women's Equality Day, that he has 'long supported the ERA' and called on Congress 'to act swiftly to recognize ratification of the ERA and affirm the fundamental truth that all Americans should have equal rights and protections under the law.'
But by simply 'directing the archivist to publish the ERA,' said the lawmakers, Biden would 'leave an indelible mark on the history of this nation, demonstrating once again that your legacy is one of expanding rights, protecting freedoms, and securing a more inclusive future for all Americans. We urge you to take this final, transformative step toward ensuring the full promise of equality for every person in the United States.'"
I'm confused. For the ERA to become part of the US Constitution:
- Congress needs to recognize its (already achieved?) ratification?
- Biden needs to direct the National Archivist to publish it?
- Biden needs to ratify the Amendment in some other way, possibly involving a big rubber stamp that lives in a drawer of the Resolute Desk & reads "RATIFIED"?

Israeli historian Ilan Pappe was targeted by US CBP this week. They seized & copied his phone & asked him questions like did he believe Israel was committing genocide against Palestinians, &if he had Palestinian friends.
My first reaction was that CBP doesn't know the first thing about Israeli historians, & likely Israel's govt told the US to target him. Turns out Pappe believes Israel's govt was involved.
It would be a good time to read his work. #Histodon #Lawstodon

Hey, #massachusetts #lawstodon
Years ago, well over a decade now, I looked into incorporating as an LLC here in Massachusetts. And I recall at the time that I got the strong impression that while one could have a registered agent, members of the corporation were still required to put their *home* addresses on record, which I found both shocking and chilling.
I'm revisiting the issue, and looking at information on the MA secretary of states website in the corporation division, it sounds like they're now scrupulously asking for members' *business* addresses.
Has there been some sort of change?
Or more to the point, is it currently possible to incorporate as an LLC in Massachusetts, and legally (perhaps by using a registered agent) not divulge one's home address in one's filing materials and the public record?
Relatedly, can the "location at which records are stored" be a U-Haul-style self-storage locker?
A meta research question for #lawfedi #lawstodon: do judges employ different writing styles based on an expectation their decision is likely to be successfully appealed?
In other words, would an appellate court spend more time, write a longer opinion, cite more cases, etc. if they expect a superior court is unlikely to grant cert and their decision is final?
Alternatively, if they know a case is likely to end up at SCOTUS, do they just ship a minimum viable opinion and move along?

In addition to bombing #Gaza 10,000 times, Israel has stripped Gazans of their legal status & revoked work permits for them in Israel, detained many of them without trial in what human rights groups call “a prohibited act of vengeance."
One Gazan worker who fled Israel's arrest campaign to the #WestBank worries for his kids. "Please God, let me go to Gaza so | can die with them—so we can die together.” Reporting in @jewishcurrents

I just spent the last holiday weekend of the [summer] wrangling with my landlord about their highly unprofessional landscaper, who has weirdly harassed us & made our lives difficult for the past few months, culminating with trying to steal a giant tub of 75 pounds of organic peaches from our harvest. When my husband caught them, they lied about it first to us, then to the landlord.
Does anyone have expertise in LL/tenant law, specifically the implied covenant of quiet enjoyment? #Lawstodon #WA
Hey #lawstodon. As a kid it was explained to me that here in the United States we have two legal systems, the civil and the criminal. Is that a fair description? If so, where do regulatory bodies fit in? They have regulations which are basically laws, like the criminal system, but they can't put you in jail or convict you, only fine you money or strip you of special legal privileges, like the civil system. So...?
What exactly is a Board of Medicine or a Department of Public Utilities in this paradigm? They function like courts, conduct things a lot like trials, and have the legal authority to impose punitive sanctions. So what part of the legal system are they? Or do we just say they're part of the executive system, since that's what institutes them, and dust our hands of the issue? If so, has anybody noticed that the executive system is holding trials? Doesn't that bother the judiciary, what with their turf being incurred upon?
This is a redacted version of the letter I got from the credit union. They actually think that they can lie to my face and tell me that they "apply this policy equally" when they NEVER ONCE asked me to remove my mask before, or gave me ANY INDICATION WHATSOEVER OF A POLICY CHANGE.
They are claiming that since the TSA does it, it must not be dangerous. These assholes don't seem to realize that the TSA is endangering people and causing more #LongCOVID #Disability cases every day by forcing people to doff their mask to be identified.
I want these gaslighting pricks to have to experience what living with Long COVID is like, since they believe that forcing people to unmask "should not create excessive risk".
The fucked up thing is if they had written emails about this change they made, or just let us know in any way that there was a conscious choice being made to expose people to COVID in order to appease their bullshit feelings, I would maybe have just accepted it. It's the gaslighting, and the claim that there is no risk, the denial that they changed anything in the first place, when I opened my account while masked, that really gets to me.
I am hoping that #lawstodon or #Legalstodon or #mastodonlawyers or someone who knows about #discrimination #law will help me with this. It's really about the principle of the thing. There were hundreds of legal cases where people were funded with all the Koch oil money on Earth to do their anti-mask "medical exemption" BS. So if they can claim a medical exemption to having to wear a mask, how can I not claim a medical exemption that allows me to #maskup and protect myself? The math isn't mathing.
They literally sent it in writing that their policy officially is to deny service to people who won't remove their mask. That seems like something I should be able to sue them about, but I'm not sure. Any #MastodonLawyers want to chime in pro bono publica? Is #lawstodon a thing? I might well have the makings of a lawsuit against this credit union. I mean there were ever so many cases of people getting medical exemptions to wearing a mask, so why should I not be able to get an exemption that allows me to #MaskUp and protect myself against illness, not just #COVID but also everything else because I am #immunocomprised ?
