We spent the day in Morpeth - they've got lovely gardens, a castle, a river running through it, and a lovely pub and cafes. It's also the burial place of Emily Wilding Davison, so it has a statue as a memorial to her
The Parish Church of St. Mary the Virgin, just south of Morpeth In Northumberland. Most of the church is 14th century in date, though parts of the tower date to the later 12th century.

A wander around Morpeth in Northumberland this afternoon, the last Saturday of summer 2024!
This is Oldgate Bridge, spanning the River Wansbeck at the northern end of the town's delightful Carlisle Park.
I was last here in the spring, just as the season was kicking in. A bit sad to see the last days of summer and autumn waiting in the wings.
Kudos to the beautiful souls at the local tandoori for supporting my daughter's fundraiser with their post-fire reconstruction grand re-opening event.

Morpeth's Oldgate Bridge, pictured this weekend, spans the River Wansbeck in Northumberland.
It may be called 'Oldgate Bridge', but the bridge itself is not that old, dating as it does from 1970. It actually replaced an older bridge which was damaged in 1963 following flooding of the river.
In this view, on the other side of the bridge is Collingwood House, former home of Admiral Lord Collingwood.

As it happens the biggest genome of all (probably) are plants in the genus Paris, another species that I have just established in the garden. The UK species is not so large, having a genome of 'only' ~40 Gb. It was first recorded by the herbalist William Turner in a single wood my hometown in 1548.
