"Recently, the government of the United States of America (USA) has frightened the scientific community…by censoring terms used in scientific communications and funding proposals…The idea that this is just relevant to American scientists or scientists from elsewhere working in America is not correct; with researchers the world over being affected. In the Netherlands, for instance, some researchers monitoring the state of forests…have received email messages, ostensibly from the #USGS (United States Geological Survey) and labelled “High Priority”. A list of questions was attached with the request to respond with answers within a week of receiving the email. The USGS indicated that sending these messages had been ordered by the United States Office of Management and Budget (#OMB)."

"In a March 14 Executive Order, President Donald Trump has targeted seven more federal agencies for permanent closure, including the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

If some parts of IMLS are "statutorily required" and cannot be shut down by an executive order, the #OMB has seven days to show it.

"EveryLibrary is hosting a petition [to keep IMLS open]…The American Library Association has…weighed in with a statement."

@exador23 @dancingdogs About 2009 or 2010 there was a major breach at #OMB that exposed virtually all Federal workers’ financial disclosures (e.g., Form OGE450). Mine included. Thankfully, the government provided lifetime identity protection service to all those affected. The frauds started to happen and continue to this day. I am grateful to have the #identity service which has provided very useful information. I hope the government provides such a service for everyone whose private data was exposed by #DOGE, but that doesn’t seem likely. One life lesson from the OMB breach and others that have affected me and many other people: your data will not remain private, no matter who gives you assurance of privacy.

In an opinion handed down on Thurs morning, Judge John J. McConnell Jr. of the Federal Dist Court for RI said the suit came down to a case of executive #overreach, in which top admin ofcls had required agencies to withhold funds authorized by #Congress.

A memo from the WH #OMB [#RussVought of #Project2025] had demanded a pause on billions in grants until the admin could determine that the funding complied w/ #Trump’s priorities….

The Millers had worked w/ #Musk in between #Trump’s terms, helping to guide his political spending behind the scenes. After the election, they became even more essential in helping him decode & navigate Trump’s world.

Musk also absorbed as much as he could about the budget process & the bureaucracy that he intended to dismantle from #RussVought, who served as dir of the powerful #OMB in Trump’s first term.

If people filed lawsuits seeking #disclosure of his emails or the op’s records under #FOIA, the arrangement would set the admin up to argue that such docs were exempt. In contrast w/agencies like the #OMB, FOIA does not apply to a president’s WH advisers or to WH entities that advise him but wield no formal #power, like the #NSC.

As he developed his strategy, #Musk drew guidance on how the executive branch operates from #Trump’s senior adviser #StephenMiller & his wife, Katie.

The operation would take over the #USDS, which had been housed within the #OMB [#RussVought], & would become a stand-alone entity in the executive office of the president. #Musk would NOT be named the #DOGE administrator, but rather an *adviser* to #Trump….

An advantage of this complicated structure was #secrecy. For all his talk about “#transparency,” Musk was obsessed w/confidentiality & fearful of #leaks.

On the 1st day of his 2nd term, #Trump signed an #ExecutiveOrder that tasked the #EPA w/reviewing the “legality & continuing applicability of” the #endangerment finding. The order gave #LeeZeldin 30 days to submit recommendations to #RussVought, the head of #OMB [& #Project2025 architect].

…Mandy Gunasekara, who served as EPA chief of staff at the end of Trump’s 1st term & wrote the EPA chpt in the conservative #Project2025, has been advising the admin on repealing the finding….

The editors said they had also added data from an Aug 2024 study by the #OMB, which found that 54% of the #FederalWorkforce was required to show up at an office every day. According to the study, just 10% of federal employees worked exclusively from home. Those allowed to have hybrid schedules ended up spending an average of 60% of their work time at federal offices.

You might ask why it’s worth grabbing onto one particular false assertion when there are so many incorrect facts & figures flooding the zone…. Last month, we witnessed the spectacle of the WH press sec, Karoline Leavitt, falsely announcing that #ElonMusk’s #DOGE & the #OMB had “found that there was about to be 50M taxpayer dollars that went out the door to fund condoms in Gaza.” Musk shared a video of the briefing on X, saying it was the tip of the iceberg.
