Now #uutil is going to replace #coreutils ? Not trusting that one bit.

The core utilities of any given #operatingsystem, as well as the kernel, display protocol, etc, etc, etc should NEVER be up to #liberal #licensing like #MIT or #BSD.

For total power to the user, the fundamental technological stack should be #copyleft, because we should have #legal expectations towards vendors.

This is also from the system that brought you #snaps. #canonical wants a #walledgarden and it shows.

Last week we went to Gibraltar for the weekend and a few days into the middle of the week

Knowing it was going to be rainy every day I didn’t bother taking my ‘good’ camera gear and only took my Fujifilm XP120 tough waterproof pocket camera, which is what I use on my morning cycle rides if the weather is wet, as I wouldn’t like to keep taking my iPhone 15 Pro Max out to get wet (it can handle it, yes, but I don’t like to get it wet unnecessarily and I risk dropping it more, and I can’t press the button with wet hands so easily and also I have to take gloves off first – on a wet day the XP120 wins in every way)

It turns out that this camera, the XP120 is probably all anyone needs for a holiday, the zoom is about the ideal range, the stab is good, the colour choices are good (standard, ‘chrome’ (which is what I leave it on) and a very good monochrome) and it doesn’t change size at all, it just gets on with it, take it out of the pocket, put it back in

The only main downside is that the geotagging is done by having to use the app on the phone to send location, which involves a performance on the camera as well, so you’re holding them both at once to make it happen, sometimes it happens, sometimes you have to swear a lot at it until the fucking app or camera decides to do the fucking simple job it was supposed to do, update the location – then once you’ve done that and walked away it still thinks you’re where you were last time you updated the location, which is disappointing but I don’t care

Overall, I’m increasingly of the opinion that we photographers are prone to overspecifying the gear we take when we go on holiday, and I’m going to attempt to just take something like this (and my iPhone) only, in future

Probably

"You should just use #Ubuntu because it's the easiest one" - this is propaganda for #Shuttleworth and tells me you haven't tried any other distro - or that you use #Arch.

#LinuxMint is fantastic still, #Fedora is my go to recommendation, but with #uBlue and #Bazzite we see a new era of usability focused #distributions.

Add to that the fact that #snaps are a centralizes repository with no third party vendors, and you've got a #vendorlockin.

Ubuntu is the #anticonsumer distribution as a result.

#Snaps can't be updated, when the app is still open. Snaps aren't (as far as I know) as easily opened to services and locations outside of the container as #flatpaks with flatseal for example.

#firefox is one example. I can't use all the add-ons I use on the Fedora RPM. #Steam is straight up unusable as a Snap and I couldn't install custom Proton versions. The rest actually is ok.

But still, it's only my laptop which I use for light surfing, media and a little of office work. #linux

I'm running #Fedora on my desktop as my main distro and I'm more than happy with it.

On my laptop I like to switch out my #linux distributions.

With 24.04 I switched to Ubuntu and upgraded to 24.10 when it released. And all in all I'm happy with it, too. #Gnome on a laptop is a must for me because of the workflow, GUI and the superb gestures.

But: It's not my main machine which I use for every kind of thing so #snaps and the problems they bring don't bother me as much.

Thx for the info, then it is like that.

Here is the goal proposal

Tbh, #bubblewrap would need to be fixed drastically to be as secure as the #Android #sandbox. And (I am not sure yet) I think even #Snaps are more secure (on #Ubuntu with #Apparmor patches) than #Flatpak with the current system.

As far as I understood, sandboxing needs to happen in #userspace, with tools like #fuse doing the work while being restricted by #MAC like #SELinux or Apparmor.
