"For generations, monarch butterflies have traveled thousands of miles across North America in remarkable, long-distance migrations. But like many other pollinators, human activity and climate change have cast a shadow over the future of these beloved insects.

"In response, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) is taking a step toward protecting monarchs: The agency proposed listing monarch butterflies as threatened under the Endangered Species Act on Tuesday, which would extend federal protection to the species. The proposal will be subject to a 90-day public comment period before potentially taking effect."

Over one in three tree species is threatened with #extinction worldwide

Thanks to the first Global Tree Assessment, the #conservation status of ~50,000 tree species was evaluated for the most recent #IUCNRedList update.

38 % are #threatened.

Infographics about the latest update of the IUCN Red List (October 2024). It revealed that 46,300 of the 166,000+ species assessed are threatened with extinction. Over 1/4 of the threatened species are trees. The rest of the picture therefore focuses on trees. 38% of the assessed tree species are threatened, i.e. more than 1 in 3 tree species. The main threats for trees are deforestation for urban development and agriculture; invasive species, pests and diseases; climate change. Some actions to prevent tree extinction are habitat protection, habitat restoration and ex-situ conservation (seed banks, botanic gardens collections).
