A ByrdWeird moment from my memory: One of the jobs I had during college was working at a dishware store as a sales associate. I say "during college" but it was when I was trying to take a break, get my bearings, and figure shit out. Still not sure I really ever figured it out. Anyway. We had gotten in this set of wine glasses that were, theoretically, drop proof. As part of our demonstrations to customers, we were asked to drop the glass from shoulder height onto the carpeted concrete floor. Not sure how many times that happened, but it happened often enough that we all became numb to it. I could never bring myself to drop it, so I largely avoided that area of the store when customers were around. Being "drop proof", the glass never broke or showed any signs of cracking. Amazing! That thing was dropped near daily for months, you would've thought it would eventually show signs of wear. It never did though. One day, I was minding my own business, cleaning, on the other side of the store far away from the "drop proof" glass. A co-worker had been showing it off, again, and was about to do the demonstration, again. She dropped the glass. The customers watched on as it neared the ground. And then... TING! Large chunks of glass exploded on the floor. My co-worker immediately started apologizing and seemed shaken. She had dropped it so many times, how could it do this? Why today? I came over to pick up the pieces as she tried to salvage the sale. The joys of working on commission. Today, as I was looking at my window and thinking about the upcoming hurricane season, this memory popped in my head. We think things -- people, places, and feelings -- can be indestructible sometimes; that they'll endure forever. They show no signs of stress or cracking. Until one day, after enough drops, they just break. They give up. Nothing and no one is an indestructible glass.
