Search Engine Land: New data: Google AI Overviews are hurting click-through rates. “Two new studies agree: Google’s AI Overviews steal clicks from organic search results. While Google told us that AI Overviews citations result in higher-quality clicks, the introduction of AI Overviews correlates with a measurable decline in organic visibility and clicks, particularly for top-ranking, […]

Save web pages for later by downloading them.

Whether you want to access the web page offline, keep a snapshot of it for archival purposes, inspect the code, or do something else, Vivaldi is here to help you out.

To download a web page:

  1. Open the page in a tab.
  2. Go to the main Vivaldi menu > File > Save Page As.
  3. Select the location for the downloaded page and, if needed, edit the file name.
  4. Select whether you want to save:
    • only the HTML code of the page,
    • the full page in a single file,
    • the complete page with files (e.g. images) in a separate folder.
  5. Click “Save”.

Shellsharks: Extending indieweb.txt With Reference Information.. “Indieweb.txt is an idea for sharing information about one’s indie site with the world. It is a proposal which resembles other plain-text, web-bourne, information-sharing documents such as humans.txt and security.txt. As initially proposed, it would contain information such as the tools one uses to implement IndieWeb […]

Disable third-party sign-in prompts on websites.

To make account registration and login faster, some websites offer to create accounts using a third-party service, such as Google, Apple, Facebook, etc. When you’re logged into one of the aforementioned sites, you’ll notice sign-in prompts popping up on websites that have implemented third-party sign-ins.

It may be easy to create an account that way, but it does allow the service providers to track and profile you, and the website may get access to personal data you might not have shared using their own sign-up form, to name just a couple of risks.

If you won’t be using this sign-in method and prefer not to see these prompts either, you can block them.

To disable third-party sign-in prompts:

  1. Go to Settings > Privacy and Security > Website Permissions > Global Permissions.
  2. Locate “Third-Party Sign-In” on the list of permissions and select “Block”.

Found while working on my content curation: Webring List. Webrings are a vintage way to explore the Internet and lately it’s been making a comeback. From the page: “I did a search for these new-style webrings and have so far found the following. Most are for non-commerical, personal sites which is what webrings were originally made for. As the big webring systems have gone, it’s just as easy […]

Thoughts about the internet—

Flashy videos that chase people around the page and bright, rapidly-scrolling page headers might be good for grabbing attention, but they are torture to a migraine sufferer. I want to run away from a page with lots of motion and flashing, not stay on it.

Stars and Stripes: DOD webpages celebrating legendary minority troops to be restored after being scrubbed from sites. “Webpages detailing the history of legendary minority service members will be restored to the Defense Department’s online platforms after the content was pulled following an agency-wide examination of material for diversity, equity and inclusion, the Pentagon said […]

Hackaday: BritCSS: Write CSS With British English Spellings. “Implemented as a simple, 14 kB JavaScript script to be included in an HTML page, it allows one to write CSS files using proper spelling, such as background-colour and centre. Meanwhile harsh language such as !important is replaced with the more pleasant !if-you-would-be-so-kind.”

Ana Rodrigues: In defense of unpolished personal websites. “My imperfect and unpolished code on my personal website isn’t the full reflection on my technical abilities or knowledge of web development standards. Tip #662

Create a Command Chain to copy the active tab’s link with a single shortcut.

If you’re a fan of using Vivaldi with your keyboard, you’re probably familiar with Ctrl/⌘ + L and Ctrl/⌘ + C shortcuts for copying the link of the web page you have open in the active tab. By using Command Chains, you can merge them into a single shortcut.

To create a chain for copying page links:

  1. Go to Settings > Quick Commands  > Command Chains.
  2. Add a new chain with the following commands.
    • Focus Address Field
    • Delay (1000)
    • Copy
  3. Go to Settings > Keyboard > Chains.
  4. Find your new chain and give it a new keyboard shortcut.

In addition, you can create a Mouse Gesture for the command, trigger it via Quick Commands, and add a button to the browser’s toolbars.

It has been good day in the end as I managed to finish off the various web sites which make up my presence on the Internet. Though as always I will tinker with them in the future especially when I find errors or better way to do things.

Same issue seen from opposite point of view: the very same #webpages using #GAFAM logins are also nightmares when it comes to privacy.

I found an answer to my question on a site called geeksforgeeks. I will not link or use a hashtag because

1) According to urlscan.io their website uses 17 different tracking and/or cookie technologies that require consent in the case of EU/EEA users: urlscan.io/result/66ad45ce-1d7

They don't ask for consent for anything.

2) Cookiebot analysis reveals the site uses 101 different trackers:

Even though this is not a FLOSS (Free/Libre and Open Source Software) site it is important to understand how what the revenue comes from. It comes from selling the data of the person visiting their site. Pure surveillance capitalism.

As you can not really know what kind of #privacy or #surveillancecapitalism hell you land into while browsing, use appropriate safeguards. Using #TorBrowser is an easy solution. As many sites (that very often are a privacy nightmare) do not allow access from Tor network, use safeguards in your normal browser. @eff has an excellent collection of privacy tools: eff.org/deeplinks/2016/09/five

They also have a dedicated Surveillance Self Defence site: ssd.eff.org/

Tip #648

Take a shortcut with “Paste and Go” to quickly open a copied link in Vivaldi on iOS.

Skipping one tiny step might not feel like much, but over time the seconds you’ve saved add up, so use the Paste and Go shortcut liberally.

To use Paste and Go:

  1. Copy a web page link or a piece of text to your clipboard.
  2. In the active or new tab, focus the Address Field either with a single tap or a long press.
  3. From the menu, select “Paste and Go” if you’ve copied a link and “Paste and Search” when you’ve copied some text.

Tip #645

Move from computer to mobile and vice versa in a breeze by sending tabs from one device to the other.

When you have Sync enabled in Vivaldi, you can view all tabs you have open in other Vivaldi instances from a button on the Tab Bar and in the Windows Panel on desktop, and from the Tab Switcher on mobile. If there’s a specific web page you’d like to access from a different device immediately, you can use the Send Tab to Device feature.

To send a tab from desktop:

  1. Right-click on the tab on the Tab Bar or on an empty area on the page.
  2. Select “Send to Your Devices”.
  3. Choose to which synced device you want to send the tab to.

To open a received tab on desktop:

  1. Click on the Synced Tabs button on the far side of the Tab Bar.
  2. Click on “From [device name]: [page link]”.

To send a tab from mobile:

  1. Open the Vivaldi menu > Share.
  2. Select “Send to Your Devices”.
  3. Choose to which synced device you want to send the tab to.

To open a received tab on mobile:

  1. After sending the tab from the other device, wait for a notification.
  2. Tap on the notification to open the page in a new tab.

If you don’t receive sent tabs, check that you’re logged in to Sync and that syncing is active. Also, check from your phone’s settings that Vivaldi is allowed to send you notifications.
