Gardiner Bryant

I just gave a talk at the public library in my town. I was able to teach a bunch of people how to use a Password Manager and it was awesome.

@gardiner_bryant that's cool! Did the library organize the event? Did you kick it off?

@Bene I proposed the idea to the director of the library and she loved it. So she organized the even and turned it into a speaker series. Mine was the inaugural lecture!

@gardiner_bryant
That's great! We're planning a similar thing here; got any advice or lessons learnt about what explanations worked best/worst?

@positivedinosaur have people write down their questions and save them for the end. You'll likely answer their questions over the course of the lecture and it will help you be more organized.

Provide folks with actionable recommendations and handouts that cover the bullet points.

Demo setup for certain things like password managers, password generation, and 2FA.

@gardiner_bryant
Thank you for sharing! I usually let people throw with soft toys when they have questions. Sidetracks ensue. Maybe I try the "write down your question" thing 🤔

I agree fully with the "actionable recommendations". Without it, it's just light horror entertainment.

How do you split the demo for the various systems? Ie. mobile vs. laptop/desktop (few people will bring the latter, sure); apple vs windows?

@gardiner_bryant
What a nice talk. That's one of the first steps to having decent security. That's basically what I teach my friends first if they're interested.
