Yesterday I became a poll worker.
I will be working early voting stations in October and polling places on November 5th. This is how I will work to help keep democracy in America.
One consequence of being a poll worker, though, is that I am not allowed to openly or publicly campaign for a candidate and that includes on Mastodon.
Although the instructions were a bit vague on exactly where the line is for campaigning (I’m still not sure if it started yesterday or it’s just during the actual voting period) I intend to take this seriously and will refrain from any political speech until after the election. Not a big loss for the world, I know, but a personal sacrifice I’m willing to make.
I encourage everyone with the time to consider volunteering to be a poll worker, especially if you are not involved in party politics.
Keeping our freedoms means being there, not just to do the hard grunt work of democracy, but also as a witness to ensure the process is untainted.
