@supernovae@universeodon.com @benny "There is a big picture problem of the HOA vibe on mastodon" There isn't. There are hundreds of instances who love their local feeds, who love public posts, whose users love having those things, and whose users are happy having those things and having the moderation teams of their instances being responsive, accountable, and willing to put in the work to keep them safe.
Keeping people proactively safe is not 'taking away their agency'. Their agency to what -not get harassed?
@supernovae@universeodon.com @benny You're ignoring these 100s of instances who are happy and protective of their local communities and whose communities don't feel *at all* that agency is being witheld from them, because you don't like moderation. We've known for years that Eugen isn't a fan of local instance communities (I've been here since 2016), but he has so far listened to the will of the people in not taking those away from us, because our voices in keeping the local feed have been strong and unanimous.
@supernovae@universeodon.com @benny What you're doing, instead, is taking a personal dislike of a feature, framing it as problematic in a vague and undefined way that nobody's ever been able to get you to clarify ('user agency'), and pretending that this is what everyone wants against a small subset of annoying little people who are kicking up a fuss and just don't want change.
The truth is the opposite. The 100s of small, and not-so-small, instances stand against you in this one. We don't want it.
@supernovae@universeodon.com @benny The reason we're not 'collaborating to address this obvious problem' is because There Is No Problem here. There are myriad other problems with user safety on Mastodon, yes. The moderation tools are lacking, there are ways in which they could be improved to make the job of moderation easier. People being able to report public posts and expecting their instance moderators to deal with those reports is not a problem. It's why, for the past seven years, people have been moving -
@supernovae@universeodon.com @benny - here from places with no human moderation and certainly no moderation that cares about their safety. Since 2016, Mastodon and the fediverse has been a sanctuary for people who got harassed off Twitter and Facebook. They CHOOSE to sign up on, or to create, instances that prioritise user safety and strong moderation because it's what THEY want. It's what the users want. If you don't want to run your instance that way, that's fine - you don't have to. Nobody said you have to. -
@supernovae@universeodon.com @benny But just say that. Say you don't want to put in the work and you don't really care about making sure your community is protected from harassment and hate speech. There's a price to pay for that, sure - you'll be defederated, and you'll probably lose users, but you'll be running your instance your way. Don't like the local TL? You're already running custom stuff on your instance, just add some more to take that out. Don't try and force it on the rest of us then claim we're -
@supernovae@universeodon.com @benny - harassing you when you face pushback.
Run your instance however the hell you want. But don't force that view on every other instance admin and then call us irrational, and toxic, and nasty, and tribal (??!) when we tell you, nah, we're good thanks.
