Paris Marx

The Hyperloop was never meant to be built. Elon Musk admitted it was all about fueling opposition to California’s high-speed rail project so it would get canceled.

He never planned to improve transportation; he just wants to keep people trapped in cars.

newrepublic.com/article/174089

@parismarx He tried to pull the same BS in #Chicago (downtown to O’Hare airport), and architects, geotechnical engineers and transportation experts told Rahm (then mayor, & total asswipe), that it couldn’t be done.
But all the politicians and Rahm fans thought it wd be great. It was all a scam. And the City abandoned some plans to improve transportation to the airport. Rahm & musk are lying, greedy, asshats.

@parismarx One of the world's worst human beings.

@Tejuino @parismarx the worst human being are the one filled with hate, elon has flaws just like another human being, at least he made hundred thousand jobs and having impact to the world

@scharlieze
@Tejuino @parismarx

He hates his own kid. He hates government. He hates labor protections. He hates people who deliver on the promises he publicly makes but never intends to keep.

Plenty of hate in him

@bhcompy @Tejuino @parismarx lol what ? You should differentiate between hating and criticize, and where do you know that he hates on those thing based only speculation and self opinion.

@scharlieze
@Tejuino @parismarx

Based on his statements and actions. You are defined by those

@parismarx
The scale-ability of the tunnels built by Elon's Boring company is questionable too.
I never condemn the company or the concept but looking how Elon planned to get passengers from the street down to the tunneled street wasn't ever convincing.

@davidbruchmann @parismarx such a farce, isn’t it? There’s just no secret sauce to the Boring Company. Hilarious how they claimed they (as Silicon Valley tech bros) would be able to make tunneling faster and more efficient than the established industry, drew a blank there, and all they could do was to make the tunnels theoretically cheaper by making them too narrow for emergency egress walkways, which makes cross passages irrelevant, so they don’t have them either. But I think the Vegas system came out relatively expensive anyway…

@stephengentle @parismarx
Yes, while there is no doubt that things get cheaper with standardized sizes, the tunnels have many disadvantages that individual constructions never have.

@parismarx Is that really the case or an excuse because he failed?

@parismarx yeah, a lot of knew this already I think
If you hated him before April 2022, this probably played a role

@parismarx I realize you're posting this as an argument that Musk is slimy, and that's fair. But it's also an argument that he's detached from reality. California high speed rail is and always was a very tenuous project, and there has always been every reason to think it was likely to fail. Opposing it never needed lies or fantasies.

@parismarx and it's a vaporware idea from the 18th century. There's a reason they aren't built and it isn't that nobody had the idea before.

@parismarx it is also nicely summed up in this meme

@parismarx

I personally cannot wait until Melon Husk's fan boys realize that he's always been a fraud.

@pvonhellermannn

@dale_hennessey @parismarx @pvonhellermannn Get ready to keep waiting...

Unfortunately it's extremely hard to de-radicalize cult members.

@danbrotherston

Yeah, agreed; I guess maybe I'm thinking more of those more centrists fans, instead of the full-on cultist fans.

@parismarx @pvonhellermannn

@dale_hennessey @danbrotherston @parismarx i always think of the millions of fans in Nigeria (Huge adoration for Musk there), India etc. so many for whom Musk’s “vision” has no space whatsoever. Really sad

@parismarx At least in this passage it says nowhere that he admitted it, right? Do you have another source that indicates this?

@perspektivbrocken @parismarx “So the Hyperloop, for example, he admitted to his biographer that the reason the Hyperloop was announced—even though he had no intention of pursuing it—was to try to disrupt the California high-speed rail project and to get in the way of that actually succeeding.”

gizmodo.com/silicon-valleys-tr

He was proud of it. And it’s not an original idea, either. GM and others conspired to get functional streetcar lines torn up in the 40s across the USA.

Gizmodo · Silicon Valley's Push Into Transportation Has Been a Miserable FailureThe titans of tech brought plenty of disruption to our broken transportation system but delivered little in the way of innovation.

@brandonlivesin @parismarx

I am not saying that it is wrong. A source for it would be nice though. Is it taken from a direct conversation with the biographer? Or is the quote from the image above the reference for this? But I grant that this is just an article on a book an it might be a bit picky.

@parismarx Tesla is a carbon credit trading company that sometimes sells cars.

@TransitBiker @parismarx

Does Tesla get royalties for allowing others to use their chargers now too? or did they have to make the patents/etc free for others?

@parismarx The man is already so fucking rich, if Tesla went completely belly up, followed by every single other company he owns, he'd still be absurdly wealthy. Jesus.

On another note, California really REALLY needs to revise the CEQA, keep Diablo Canyon running, and change eminent domain or zoning laws so the subway in LA can actually do its job. I'm neeeeever moving to California given how terrible it seems to drive around there.

@parismarx this reminds me of a quote

"A developed country is not a place where the poor have cars. It's where the rich use public transportation."
-- Enrique Penalosa, former Mayor of Bogotá, Colombia

(via a video by @notjustbikes)

@parismarx Well the high-speed rail project itself was nearly as vapory-ware.

@parismarx Doesn't surprise me at all. Odious and vile man.

@parismarx I think the funniest thing is that Richard Branson believed this bullshit, even if 7 grade phisics didn't match and almost got bankrupted.

@parismarx It is not surprising that Musk wants to keep people driving and buying cars, since the majority of his fortune is in a company selling cars.

@parismarx Great! We have a multi-billionaire saboteur on our hands

@parismarx one of the foundational precepts of American business: Lie

@parismarx Might be just a side effect. I thnk he needs all this projects for mars. Solar, E-cars, tunnel, satelites and last but not least rockets. (twitter for AI training and funding influcence)

@parismarx

One cannot take anything Musk says to be in anyone's interest than his own. Not even other members of his class take him seriously. America shouldn't. Not even SpaceX is for "humanity." It's to fund and profit from the pollution of low earth orbit.

These are the antics of a Bond villain without a Bond.

@parismarx I am not an engineering expert but the youtuber thunderf00t pretty much convinced me that it is a death trap.

Also not to mention musk is also that type of guy that calls people "pedophiles" when they disagree with him.

@parismarx Great reminder that we shouldn't let people who own car companies decide our transportation planning.

But a few caveats...

- There are people (not Musk) genuinely trying to make hyperloop work.

- Hyperloop could work well with self driving cars (it replaces air travel not car travel).

Caveat to the caveats:

- High speed rail is possible already and a good rail network using existing tech can replace most short haul flights, if we just invest in it.

@parismarx despite the framing, there is no admission of anything by Musk quoted in this article.

Accuracy matters.

@parismarx & anyway it was always a ridiculous idea. Claims about journey times were based on point-to-point express, which isn't possible in a sealed system running under vaccuum. The vaccuum tunnel concept was highly problematic. There were never even any vague blue sky ideas about how you get people on & off. Construction costs were massively underestimated & no attempt was ever made to validate them.
It was pure bullshit, start to finish. But few people seemed willing to call it that.

@parismarx Just when you think Muskrat is a shitty human, he outdoes himself!

@parismarx Yet just more evidence that fElon MusKKKolini is just as big of a piece of shit as we think that he is.
