I hear people are doing a surprise-pikachu about Discord's new ad push?
arstechnica.com/gadgets/2025/0

Truly surprising that a *checks notes* proprietary, centralized, VC-funded platform started enshittifying the moment it gained enough market share to make it very difficult for people to flow elsewhere. 🤯

Nobody saw that coming! :blobcat0_0:

Any people reading this who rely on Discord: this is your nudge to consider moving elsewhere.

Where? I don't know. What I do know is that whatever alternative I suggest, you will find a myriad of reasons why it just "won't cut it."

But I also know that if resources were spent on making the hard-to-enshittify decentralized platforms better, they would get better, while still remaining hard to enshittify.

So, perhaps it's worth it to trade some short-term convenience for long-term resilience. 🤷‍♀️

I am not on Discord, and I have no intention of ever setting up an account. I got fooled once or twice by centralized platforms, but I learned my lesson and I am going to avoid being fooled again if at all possible.

And you know what? It is really quite possible. :blobcatcoffee:

If more people made a similar decision, it would be even easier. Every little bit counts.

We really refuse to understand how much power we actually do have as far as saying "no" to abusive technologies is concerned.

@rysiek We could really use a properly federated open version of Discord actually now that you say it.

@scyzoryk We have it. Matrix.

Fluffychat is the client I recommend for those who want a more Discord-y feeling than Element X brings.

@rysiek

@troed @rysiek Very cool! Now all the cool gamer kids have to go there.

@troed @scyzoryk @rysiek Hah, I always felt Cinny is more Discord'y than fluffy. Fluffy always strikes me more as "simple for family" like Signal is designed.

@troed has that started working? It was a nightmare last time I tried it, especially for encrypted chats. We couldn’t get a three person group chat to deliver messages to everyone that they could read on all their 1-3 and we were three programmers who tried for months

@amanda Surely that was ages ago? I run a family server so a bunch of non-techies, including my elderly parents, with no issues.

@troed less than a year ago. It might be the iOS clients that are terrible, because I tried all of them and none of them worked. They couldn’t even reliably deliver notifications.

@troed I also had things like ”I turn my phone to the side and the app crashes” and ”if I paste text from one particular app it renders funny” and a bunch of other graphical glitches

@amanda Weird. I use Element X on iOS and I'm perfectly happy. Come to think of it, the X-version might be new since a year though.

@troed I tried it too but it was billed as the new and unstable version
